About the role
This is entry-level manual labor and semi-skilled technical work performing routine facility and equipment maintenance tasks as well as general janitorial duties for the parking operations division. Positions report to a designated supervisor and work under general supervision. Work is distinguished by its routine and as-needed preventative maintenance activities and janitorial duties.
Responsibilities
- Performs general cleaning activities such as trash collection, restroom cleaning, window washing, spill clean-up, and sweeping or blowing of dirt/leaves/debris.
- Inspects buildings, equipment, and grounds for needed maintenance and repair; handles minor repairs (e.g., fencing, drywall, minor carpentry).
- Performs general painting of walls, floors, or other structures (e.g., graffiti cover-up, stencil use).
- Performs minor plumbing maintenance (e.g., repair of leaks, unclogging drains/toilets).
- Operates pressure washer for routine and as-needed cleaning of buildings, floors, stairwells, and other structures.
- Repairs, replaces, and changes parking-related signs and instructional devices.
- Maintains grounds around parking structures, including mowing, weed eating, edging, trimming, and blowing debris using gas-powered, electric, or hand-powered tools.
- Performs routine and as-needed repair and programming of parking meters (e.g., head replacement, cleaning, lubrication, removing obstructions, resetting, battery changes, reprogramming).
- Maintains inventory of maintenance and janitorial tools/supplies; works with vendors to recommend procurement, confirm receipt, and stock items.
- Performs routine collection and audit of parking meters, collaborating with coworkers and other city departments.
- Adheres to policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
- Attends work on a continuous and regular basis.
- May respond under emergency conditions or perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- One year of experience in building/facility maintenance, including use of tools and equipment.
- Valid driver’s license required at time of appointment and throughout employment.
Skills
- Knowledge of and ability to operate tools/supplies used in grounds keeping and facility maintenance (e.g., lawn mower, weed eater, pressure washer, blower, air compressor, pneumatic tools, painting equipment, chemicals).
- Knowledge of safety precautions for maintenance work.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks under variable weather conditions.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public, including handling angry or abusive individuals.
- Ability to read and understand written communications (e.g., emails, documents, handwritten directions).
- Basic computer skills (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, internet searches).
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to adhere to grooming and dress codes (uniforms provided).
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle tools, squat, stoop, kneel, reach above head, and bend/twist neck and trunk.
- Occasional sitting, climbing ladders, and operating city vehicles or motorized equipment.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
- Work may involve extreme heat, confined spaces, outdoor conditions, local travel, exposure to hazardous chemicals (e.g., fuel, paint thinner, cleaning products), and occasional shifts outside normal business hours.
Pay
Salary range: $15.06 – $23.51 per hour.
