Parking Enforcement Officer
About the role
This position enforces local and state laws and ordinances regarding traffic direction and parking enforcement. Duties include patrolling to detect and deter parking violations, assisting with traffic control, providing traffic direction and control at special events, testifying in judicial proceedings, maintaining and inspecting patrol vehicles, completing reports and forms, issuing parking tickets and citations, and performing courier duties.
Responsibilities
- Patrols business and residential areas to detect and deter parking violations; issues parking tickets.
- Affords assistance to patrol units at traffic accidents.
- Provides traffic direction and control at special events like parades, funerals, and ball games.
- Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.
- Maintains and inspects assigned patrol vehicle.
- Completes all required reports and forms and parking tickets and citations; mails letters to those receiving parking tickets and civil citations.
- Issues construction parking permits.
- Affords assistance to the general public with directions and other related matters.
- Attends ongoing training classes as required.
- Performs courier duties for the department.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of relevant state laws, traffic codes, city ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of the geography and streets of the city.
- Knowledge of the court system and judicial procedures.
- Skill in operating police vehicles and emergency equipment.
- Skill in dealing with the general public.
- Skill in the maintenance of department records.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.

Pay
Salary range: $38,000 - $45,000 annually.

Applicants must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.
Supervisory Controls
The Sergeant assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Complexity
The work consists of related technical law enforcement duties. The necessity of dealing with the public contributes to the complexity of the work.
Personal Contacts
Contacts are typically with co-workers, court system personnel, and the general public. Purposes of contacts are typically to exchange information, provide services, justify matters, and resolve problems.
