Salary range: \$51,048.92 – \$62,808.20 annually (firm range). Step-based salary system with annual increases on hire anniversary, typically starting at Step 1. Bargaining unit: Laborer.

About the role

Reports to the Executive Director of the Parking Authority or their designee. Responsible for enforcing all city parking rules and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas (parking lots, city streets) to enforce parking rules and regulations.
  • Tag illegally parked vehicles on overtime meters and in restricted areas.
  • Chalk tires in unmetered areas and recheck to ticket overtime violators.
  • Operate hand-held ticketing devices for enforcement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director or designee.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Technical proficiency and training in the use of computerized equipment.
  • Two years of experience enforcing parking rules and regulations for a municipality, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License with a minimum of two years driving experience.

Skills

  • Knowledge of city ordinances related to parking enforcement and ability to enforce them impartially.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to interact effectively and tactfully with customers, co-workers, and other city employees, even in stressful or adversarial situations.
  • Polite, courteous, and professional demeanor.

Physical demands

  • Moderate physical effort required; work is performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Frequent walking, standing, sitting, speaking, hearing, reaching, stooping, and climbing.
  • Ability to use hand tools and operate ticketing equipment.
  • Must have sufficient stamina to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Vision requirements include reading documents, operating equipment, and driving.

Work environment

  • Work is performed outside in downtown areas, primarily on foot patrol or via Parking Authority vehicle for enforcement outside downtown.
  • Regular contact with customers and other city employees.
  • Errors may result in monetary loss to the city or service delays.
