JOB SUMMARY
To patrol assigned areas, enforce parking regulations by issuing citations; and to assist citizens by providing directions and handling parking complaints. Employees in this classification receive limited supervision within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This job class functions at a full journey level of classification and requires knowledge of parking rules and regulations and the ability to courteously and tactfully deal with the public.
Examples of Duties
- Patrols assigned area and parking lots in assigned vehicle (to include 3 wheeled scooter, T3, right hand drive jeep, and various other city vehicles) or on foot; issues citations for violations of parking regulations according to City, County and State laws.
- Marks tires of parked vehicles with extended chalk marking stick and record time of marking and return at regular intervals to ensure that parking time limits are not exceeded.
- Collections parking revenue from garage equipment and reports malfunctioning of equipment.
- Maintains log of citations issued and other related activities.
- Posts “No Parking” signs or barricades for special events.
- Testsifies in court on citations issued as required.
- Assists citizens with parking compliance, abandoned vehicles, lost children, and elderly citizens.
- Assists Police Officers in directing traffic and traffic control.
- Performs simple vehicle maintenance procedures such as checking oil and gas, and report mechanical problems to supervisors.

Typical Qualifications
- Education/Experience: Any combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
- A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Licenses/Certificates: Possession at the time of hire and continued maintenance of a valid California Driver’s license and safe driving record.
Special Requirements
- Successful completion of background investigation.
Supplemental Information
- The candidate will be appointed for a 12-month probationary period.
- Names of successful candidates who do not receive a job offer will be placed on an employment list which normally remains effective for one year.
- The Human Resources Department may abolish an Employment list at any time the needs of the City so require.
- This position is represented by the Operating Engineers Local Union No.3 bargaining group.
- Prior to appointment to the position of Parking Control Officer, a medical examination and Department of Justice Livescan fingerprinting will be required.
