Park Technician

About the Role

Devils Fork State Park is the sole public access point to the pristine, 7,565-acre Lake Jocassee, a mountain spring-fed lake surrounded by the Jocassee Gorges. The park offers unique attractions such as waterfalls accessible only by boat, exceptional trout fishing, scuba diving, swimming in unusually clear waters, and the Oconee Bell Nature Trail, where hikers can spot the endangered Oconee bell wildflower during spring.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and upkeep of state park facilities, including repair and construction of buildings, operation and repair of motorized equipment, and groundskeeping.
  • Assist with park administration and visitor services.
  • Conduct miscellaneous repairs and improvements, including carpentry, masonry, electrical, plumbing, landscaping, and grounds keeping.
  • Maintain maintenance vehicles: log trips, clean the shop weekly, wash vehicles, and coordinate repairs with commercial vendors.
  • Repair and maintain motorized equipment and perform preventative maintenance on facilities, equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Keep detailed maintenance records and assist seasonal staff with assigned tasks.
  • Ensure daily job assignments are completed on time and direct clean-up activities to maintain park attractiveness, cleanliness, and safety.
  • Identify and address hazards, such as trees that need removal, before they become issues.
  • Manage trash disposal, including scheduling compactor emptying and maintaining trash buggies.
  • Promote teamwork within the park, region, and agency, and represent the office on assigned agency teams.
  • Assist the Maintenance Manager in overseeing CNST projects and tasks.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of general maintenance experience.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy lifting, walking, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling, and working at heights.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and with cleaning agents and maintenance materials.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written procedures and directions, as well as perform intermediate arithmetic computations.
  • Proficiency in operating a variety of power tools and motorized equipment.
  • Valid South Carolina Driver’s License.

Schedule

Full-time, 40 hours per week with a rotating schedule that includes weekends and holidays.
