About the Role

The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation offers an opportunity to support the statewide Park Ranger Program as a Park and Recreation Specialist 1.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares various reports, including reports on bureau spending.
  • Reviews patron and employee feedback to inform program decisions.
  • Assists with bureau budget preparation and justification.
  • Assigns, reviews, trains, and evaluates work of lower-level seasonal employees.
  • Controls access to parking to and from park facilities during peak periods.
  • May be assigned responsibility for specific park or facility programs and activities.
  • Keeps inventory of training equipment and monitors its condition.
  • Instructs classes related to the Park Ranger program.
  • Assists in emergency situations by applying emergency procedures, assisting and directing staff, and working with patrons to minimize potential problems.
  • Coordinates logistical aspects of routine programs and special events, including security, traffic flow, and cleanup.
  • Performs a variety of tasks, including carrying out small projects.
  • Serves as a member of a project team to complete segments of larger, more complex projects.
  • Serves as assistant to the Director of Park Rangers for projects by providing determinations or recommendations based on research and analysis.
  • Conducts field inspections to assist in gathering and analyzing data and/or to ensure proper implementation of the program.
  • Reviews and analyzes incident reports and statistical summaries and provides recommendations.
  • Reviews and responds to inquiries from the general public in shared mailboxes.
  • Attends various events to represent the Park Ranger Program.

Requirements

  • One year of experience in maintenance, construction, landscaping, business operations, park operations, or in an organized recreation program.
  • Valid driver’s license that allows operation of a motor vehicle in New York State (required to maintain the position).

Preferred qualification: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid NYS Security Guard License and Registration (operational needs and preferred qualifications will be discussed at the time of interview and appointment).
