Probationary pay: $18.13 per hour. After probation: $18.49 per hour.

About the role

The Park Maintenance Worker I assists and performs maintenance of parks, open space facilities, and other maintained public areas. Acquired skills and experience are gained through training with advanced workers. Performs custodial and general maintenance services by keeping assigned areas clean, orderly, safe, and secure with established standards and adjusting individual assignments. Uses various types of power-driven machines and cleaning materials. Performs general maintenance to include minor repairs and preventive maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Cares for established park grounds; performs a variety of tasks, which may include any combination of the following: mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, digging, sprinkler repair, fence repair, maintaining existing landscapes, painting, planting, pruning, weeding, aerating, trash removal, and general upkeep of lawns and grounds.
  • Assists in the groundwork of soil preparation, soil leveling, seeding, sod installation, and weed control.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and supplies, cleans, and cares for basic tools and equipment.
  • Assists trade workers with general facility maintenance.
  • Delivers and assembles tents, outdoor bleachers, stands, and tables for special events.
  • Assists other park maintenance crews with thinning and chipping of trees, shrubs, flower beds, and weeding.
  • Learns and demonstrates working with and/or mixing of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and/or insecticides and applying them through sprays under the direction of the qualifying party.
  • Learns and demonstrates the operation and performance of daily maintenance of a variety of ground maintenance equipment, vehicles, trailers, power-driven tools, and equipment utilized in the performance of duties.
  • May be required to drive work trucks to and from work sites after successful completion of Bernalillo County’s defensive driving course.
  • Adheres to safe work practices and procedures in accordance with appropriate regulations and standards.
  • Completes weekly work sheets and preventive and corrective action work orders assigned by supervisor.
  • Follows standard operating procedures for the department.
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year experience in ground-keeping and landscaping.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Successful completion of a post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  • Adherence to all County safety guidelines.
  • Completion of all FEMA training(s) assigned to this position.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of hire and maintenance of a valid license while employed in this position.
  • Complete required supervisor training, if applicable.
  • Ability to understand and fully execute both oral and written instructions in English and to perform work assignments with minimal supervision.
  • If a county employee, must not have been on a Sick Leave Corrective Action Plan for attendance issues within the last 12 months.
  • If a county employee, must not have a disciplinary action or written reprimand within the last 12 months.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors, with exposure to natural weather conditions.
  • Exposure to occasional noise and vibration factors in the operation of equipment.
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and mists.
  • Work is performed on even and uneven terrain. Surfaces may be wet, dry, natural ground, or paved. Work may be performed on inclines and occasionally on ladders.
  • Work hazards include exposure to dust, chemicals such as herbicides, fertilizers, pesticides, severe weather conditions, heavy lifting, working on potentially slick surfaces and ladders, and using power equipment.
  • Works as part of a crew and under close supervision.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.

Equipment, Tools, and Materials

  • Utilizes tools and equipment such as sickle mower, push mower, sprayer, weed-eater, power blower, pruning shears, ladders, and assorted hand tools used in grounds maintenance.
  • Uses gloves, goggles, boots, dust masks, earplugs, and occasionally respirators in performance of essential duties.
  • Operates various types of County vehicles in the performance of essential duties.

Mental Functions

  • Ability to ask questions of foreman, listen to, and follow verbal and written directions in English.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with co-workers.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of use of tools, equipment, and materials in a safe manner in the performance of essential duties.

Physical Functions

  • Ability to stand and/or walk up to four (4) hours at one time, and up to eight (8) hours total per day.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally from ground to waist level. Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds frequently from ground to shoulder level.
  • Ability to bend at waist and twist/rotate waist if necessary for up to one-half of workday.
  • Ability to crouch and kneel frequently.
  • Ability to work with arms extended and bent for up to four (4) hours at one time, and seven and one-half (7.5) hours total per day.
  • Ability to push/pull with arms with a force of up to 50 plus pounds.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work from ladders while trimming trees or shrubs.
  • Ability to coordinate use of hands and eyes in performance of essential duties.
