Parenteral Nutrition Management RD III

About the role

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Parenteral Nutrition Management Registered Dietitian III in the Clinical Nutrition Department. The Registered Dietitian (RD) III - Parenteral Nutrition (PN) Management RD functions at an advanced level of clinical practice, serving as a core member of the GI Nutrition - Nutrition Support Service (NSS). In alignment with the ASPEN Scope of Practice for the Registered Dietitian on the Nutrition Support Team, this role is responsible for comprehensive nutrition care for medically complex pediatric patients.

Responsibilities

• Conduct detailed nutrition assessments following the Nutrition Care Process and document in ADIME.
• Develop, initiate, and adjust individualized enteral nutrition (EN) and custom parenteral nutrition (PN) prescriptions based on evidence-based guidelines and patient-specific needs.
• Monitor and interpret biochemical, anthropometric, and clinical indicators to guide ongoing EN and PN management.
• Participate in interdisciplinary team rounds and contribute clinical expertise to optimize nutrition outcomes.
• Educate patients, families, and healthcare professionals regarding PN therapy, home transition, and long-term nutrition support follow-up.
• Collaborate with physicians, pharmacists, advanced practice nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered PN care.
• Support quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and protocol development to advance pediatric nutrition support standards.
• Verify that enteral/parenteral nutrition is administered in accordance with the prescribed therapeutic plan and is well tolerated by each patient.
• Establish individual plans of care for nutrition support therapy, including immediate, intermediate, and long-term goals.
• Evaluate educational needs of patients and document objectives for home nutrition support, specifying the recommended route and reassessing periodically.
• Tailor Medical Nutrition Therapy for disease-specific constraints and clinical status changes that may affect tolerance and nutrient utilization.
• Write orders (once credentialed) for parenteral nutrition prescriptions, including macro- and micronutrients, fluid volume, electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, and medications such as insulin and acid suppression; enteral nutrition; and oral diets.
• Authorize changes to EN/PN orders based on clinical assessment of the patient.
• Instruct patients and families on modified diets and home enteral feeding regimens when follow-up in clinic is planned.
• Assist with discharge planning for home parenteral nutrition patients.
• Instruct, assist in training, and check the work of less experienced staff under general direction.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• BS/BA in Nutrition, Dietetics, or other relevant major.
• MS/MA in Nutrition or Dietetics.
• Registered Dietitian (RD) with successful completion of a coordinated program, dietetic internship, or other experience approved by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education (CADE) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
• Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
• Maintenance of RD credential through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) by accrual of 75 units of approved Continuing Professional Education every 5 years.
• Minimum of 6 years total acute care clinical experience.
• Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) credential.

Preferred Qualifications

• Member of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and relevant practice group(s).
• Member of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN).

Schedule

Full-time (1.0 FTE), Days – 8 hour shift.

Pay

The pay range reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position, based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and current market data. Compensation at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications, experience, and organizational considerations, such as internal equity.
