About the Role
The School-Based Parent Liaison fosters a welcoming, inclusive, and family-centered school environment by building strong partnerships between the school, families, and the community. This position serves as a key point of contact for parents and guardians, promoting meaningful family engagement through proactive communication, outreach, and educational opportunities. The Parent Liaison coordinates family involvement events, manages school volunteer programs, and collaborates with school administration to address parent questions, concerns, and needs. By strengthening relationships and increasing family participation, the School-Based Parent Liaison helps support student success and contributes to a positive school culture.
Responsibilities
- Comply with all applicable federal and state laws, Virginia Board of Education regulations, and School Board and Superintendent policies and procedures.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students, families, staff, and community members while serving as a primary point of contact for parents and guardians.
- Assist families in navigating school and division processes by connecting them with appropriate staff, programs, services, and community resources.
- Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, social workers, English Learner (EL) staff, specialized instruction staff, teachers, and other School Support Team members to coordinate services that support student success.
- Provide information about school and community programs, services, and resources available to eligible students and families, and encourage participation as appropriate.
- Facilitate referrals to community agencies and organizations that provide additional support to students and families.
- Coordinate language access services for bilingual families by arranging interpreters and translated materials for parent-teacher conferences, school meetings, events, and other school-related communications as needed.
- Promote a welcoming and inclusive school environment by ensuring signage, bulletin boards, informational displays, and family communications are accessible and available in the languages represented within the school community.
- Support effective communication between the school, families, and the community by sharing information about school and division initiatives, programs, events, and resources.
- Advocate for students and families by helping identify and address barriers to engagement and access to educational opportunities.
- Plan, coordinate, and support family engagement activities, workshops, and events that strengthen partnerships between home and school.
- Recruit, coordinate, and support school volunteers in accordance with division policies and procedures.
- Attend and actively participate in school, division, and community meetings, trainings, and professional learning opportunities related to family engagement and student support.
- Maintain confidentiality of student, family, and personnel information in accordance with applicable laws and division policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and vision of Manassas Park City Schools.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills, with the professionalism and personal qualities necessary to build positive relationships with parents, students, staff, and community members.
- Knowledge of, and ability to effectively engage with, the school's Spanish-speaking community.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, including the ability to speak, read, write, interpret, and translate accurately between both languages.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain collaborative, respectful, and trusting relationships.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and respond with professionalism, empathy, and cultural sensitivity in a variety of situations.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
Physical Requirements
This position operates in a professional school environment that includes classrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, auditoriums, and outdoor learning or recreational areas. The work environment involves noise levels that may range from low to moderate and requires frequent walking, standing, and movement throughout the school day. Occasional climbing, kneeling, or crouching may also be required. Periods of sitting are common while preparing lessons, grading assignments, or completing administrative tasks. The position may require lifting or moving instructional materials, classroom supplies, or equipment weighing up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 25 pounds or more. Regular use of computers, interactive whiteboards, projectors, printers, and other instructional technologies is required to support teaching and learning. Clear verbal communication, active listening, and visual attentiveness are essential for delivering instruction and ensuring student safety. The role involves daily interaction with students and regular collaboration with colleagues, administrators, and families. Occasional travel between school sites or participation in supervised field trips may also be required. School employees must be able to manage multiple responsibilities and adapt to the demands of a dynamic, fast-paced educational environment.
