About the role
Apply only if you do not have Fire I and II certifications or any current firefighting experience. For firefighters-paramedics, apply to the firefighter-paramedic position.
Responsibilities
- Effectively respond to fire, rescue, first aid, and related emergencies.
- Participate in daily drills, protect life and property.
- Maintain equipment, apparatus, and buildings.
- Perform fire safety surveys and pre-plans.
- Perform routine housekeeping of fire station facilities, grounds, and equipment.
- Participate in training activities.
- Other work as assigned.
Requirements
- Must have or be in school for a State of Michigan Paramedic License at the time of application.
- Must have a State of Michigan Paramedic License before date of hire.
- Must be a U.S. citizen; 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have or be able to obtain a valid Michigan driver's license and a good driving record.
- No felony convictions and no record of serious misdemeanor convictions.
- Must successfully pass or have proof of successfully passing a Physical Ability Test (CPAT or OPAT) within the last (1) year by date of hire.
- Must have a current passing score (at least 70%) on record with Empco by date of application and have The City of Southfield Fire Department selected in your profile.
Supplemental Information
- The selection process includes completing a City of Southfield application, a review of qualifications, driving record and criminal history check, a written examination, and an oral board interview.
- Selected candidates must pass an extensive background investigation, psychological evaluation, and physical exam before employment.
- Applicants must maintain all minimum requirements and certifications while waiting for consideration for employment.
- Candidates will remain eligible for one year from placement on the Eligibility List.
