Paramedic - PRN- Aurora

About the role

Under the direction of the Medical Director and according to the protocols, procedures, and policies of Mercy EMS, performs direct patient care including assessment, evaluation, basic and advanced medical rescue to access, stabilize, evacuate, and transport a patient to an appropriate destination. Performs clerical and maintenance duties, and related duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• Assess and evaluate patients in emergency situations
• Perform basic and advanced medical rescue operations
• Stabilize and transport patients to appropriate medical facilities
• Operate and maintain emergency medical equipment
• Perform clerical and maintenance duties as required
• Respond quickly to ambulance calls and access patients in difficult terrain
• Climb stairs and work in close, dangerous environments such as damaged vehicles
• Carry equipment and patients in partnership with others
• Perform strenuous physical activities such as CPR, lifting, and moving patients and equipment
• Use mobile and portable communications equipment, monitor/defibrillator/pacer, stretcher, stair chair, backboard, and other medical/rescue tools
• Operate assigned ambulance, computer, fax, printer, and other office-related equipment

Requirements

• Paramedic (EMT-P) license for the state of practice
• Valid driving license
• At least 19 years of age
• Hazmat awareness level training
• ACLS certification at hire
• PALS certification within 6 months of hire/transfer
• Unimpaired mobility to respond quickly and access patients in various environments
• Ability to perform strenuous physical requirements and medical skills
• Correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles
• Color acuity adequate for determining skin and blood color
• Ability to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes
• Hearing ability to understand information from patients, families, or bystanders
• Ability to hear breath sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressures
• Ability to differentiate conversations in active, distracting environments
• Ability to hear and understand radio traffic with lights and sirens
• Ability to speak clearly and audibly in loud and stressful conditions
• Successful completion of pre-hire and annual fitness for duty tests

Physical Requirements

• Ability to push, pull, and/or lift 50 lbs on a regular basis
• Prolonged standing and walking during each shift
• Ability to grip, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and squat to perform duties

Preferred Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• ITLS or equivalent training
• Background in Emergency Services
• Training in Tactical EMS (TEMS) where applicable
