Responsibilities
- Assess patient needs in the prehospital setting, provide appropriate medical care, and adapt treatment plans based on condition changes.
- Deliver high-quality care within EMS scope of practice, including medication administration, airway management, IV/IO access, ECG interpretation, and ventilator assistance.
- Safely transport patients between hospitals, emergency scenes, and healthcare facilities while ensuring continuous monitoring and accurate documentation.
- Communicate clearly with dispatch, medical control, receiving facilities, and team members to support coordinated, multidisciplinary care.
- Follow all safety, infection-control, and aviation protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients and crew.
- Maintain equipment readiness by performing regular checks, restocking supplies, and ensuring transport units or aircraft are mission-ready.
- Perform infacility duties aligned with EMS certification, including assisting with patient care, simulations, and quality-improvement activities.
- Participate in ongoing training and continuing education to maintain clinical competency and support high-quality patient outcomes.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Successful completion of EMS paramedic training from an approved training course is required.
- Experience: At least three (3) years of experience as a paramedic is required.
- Licenses/Certifications: Basic Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support & Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications required.
- Valid Iowa driver’s license for at least three years with an acceptable or clear rating according to the Motor Vehicle Record chart.
- No record of DUI, DWI, or similar alcohol or drug related offenses over the past five years.
- No record of reckless driving, careless driving, speeding over 15 miles above the speed limit, fleeing or eluding a police officer, chemical test refusal, leaving the scene of an accident, driving after revocation or suspension, or passing a stopped school bus in the last five years.
- Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English, basic computer knowledge using word processing, spreadsheet, email, and web browser.
