About the role

The Position The Contra Costa County Employee Retirement Association (CCCERA) is seeking to fill the position of Retirement Counselor I at its Concord office. Under direct supervision, performs a variety of specialized technical counseling and fiscal work in support of the Contra Costa County Employee's Retirement Association.

Responsibilities

  • Counsels relations, responds orally or in writing to a wide variety of retirement benefit questions for active, deferred, and retired members, clearly articulating their various options so members can make informed retirement planning choices.
  • Calculates and verifies retirement, death, disability, and deferred benefits in accordance with the County Employees Retirement Act of 1937; processes member applications.
  • Maintains and verifies active member retirement accounts, including member status, rate schedules, interest rates and service factors; verifies eligibility and calculates contribution rate changes.
  • Interviews and counsels members contemplating disability retirement, including home visits for those members requiring personal attention.
  • Administers, processes, and distributes a large and complex retirement payroll meeting all requirements of the County Employees' Retirement Act of 1937, Federal and State Tax reporting Regulations and Payroll Control issues.
  • Computing arithmetic calculations, posting, processing and verifying financial or statistical records, computing member benefits, and using computer skills and knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications.

Requirements

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate. Experience: Two (2) years of full time or its equivalent highly specialized clerical experience at the level equivalent to Retirement Office Specialist, Retirement Member Services Technician or Senior Clerk in an assignment involving extensive contact with the public answering, interpreting, and explaining such matters as regulations, policies and procedures and providing instructions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major field of study in Business, Public Administration, and Accounting, Economics or a related field.
  • Possession of the Certified Employee Benefits Specialist professional certification in pension benefits management.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to perform complex arithmetic calculations and post, process, and verify financial or statistical records.
  • Knowledge of computing and using word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
