Firefighter/Paramedic
About the role
The Firefighter/Paramedic position in the City of La Habra Heights is a part-time non-benefited role. This position involves responding to fires, medical emergencies, traffic collisions, rescues, and non-emergency incidents while providing high-quality service to the community.
Responsibilities
- Provides pre-hospital care including examining patients and monitoring vital signs;
- Establishes I.V. access, administers medications, utilizes advanced airways, monitors and interprets cardiac rhythms, and takes other basic and advanced first aid and life support actions;
- Communicates with hospital and/or health care professionals in person or by radio;
- Completes required reports;
- Restocks supplies and maintains emergency vehicles and ensures equipment is in proper working condition;
- In a fire emergency, connects supply lines, controls and extinguishes fires using various size hand-lines, ladders, and portable water monitors;
- Searches buildings and rescues victims from buildings and motor vehicles sometimes using specialized power and hand tools;
- Uses various hand and power tools to obtain entry to buildings, frees trapped accident victims, and provides ventilation;
- Contains, controls, and decontaminates hazardous material spills;
- Participates in clean-up, salvage, overhaul operations; cleans, services, and ensures operational readiness of fire vehicles, apparatus hoses, and equipment; assists with the maintenance of the station and facilities; and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Active, unrestricted State of California Paramedic License;
- Valid AHA BLS card;
- Completion of a California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) certified Firefighter 1 Academy or Firefighter 1 certification;
- Los Angeles County Accreditation must be obtained within 60 days of employment;
- Valid California Class C Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Firefighter Endorsement within 1 year of employment;
- Satisfactory driving record clear of misdemeanor and felony convictions;
- Ability to work 24-hour shifts as assigned;
- Pass and maintain physical requirements as specified by the City.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of principles and practices of fire suppression;
- Knowledge of emergency medical care at the advanced life support level;
- Understanding of computer report product techniques and maintaining accurate records to prepare written reports;
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing in the English language.

The firefighter/paramedic position is a part-time non-benefited position. Part-time positions are limited to 960 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Due to budgetary constraints, operational budgets do not include funding of CalPERS employer contributions for part-time positions. Therefore, a qualified candidate who is a member of CalPERS from current or past employment will be restricted from part-time employment. Part-time positions are non-benefited positions. Part-time positions are limited to 960 hours on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Due to budgetary constraints, operational budgets do not include funding of CalPERS employer contributions for part-time positions. Therefore, a qualified candidate who is a member of CalPERS from current or past employment will be restricted from part-time employment.
Pay
Compensation starts at $23.16 per hour.
