Responsibilities

• Provide optimum patient care in accordance with the EMS Act of 1985 (Act 45) and all regional guidelines/protocols.
• Maintain personal knowledge and skills to deliver optimum patient care as an EMT role model for other emergency service personnel.
• Supervise the performance of EMT trainees and other observers.
• Safely operate EMS vehicles in accordance with the current motor vehicle code of the State of New Mexico.
• Stock and maintain vehicles and their contents in a state of readiness; document maintenance activities.
• Work in hazardous environments to ensure patient safety and stabilization.
• Collaborate with local ALS, fire, and law enforcement agencies as part of a coordinated patient care team.
• Document all patient care, assessments, and service reports accurately and in a timely manner.
• Maintain crew vehicles, radios, equipment, supplies, and quarters in a state of readiness.
• Act professionally at all times and handle conflict situations with professional judgment.
• Ensure full compliance with all HIPAA requirements and regulations.
• Manage work procedures, expedite workflow, and provide coaching and counseling to team members (if supervisory responsibilities apply).

Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience as an EMT; prior EMS experience recommended.
• High School diploma or GED required.
• Understanding of low voltage power and synergy preferred.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• Certification by the State of New Mexico as an Emergency Medical Technician.
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license that is not under suspension or revocation.
• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification meeting AHA standards.
• Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and/or Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) certification (allowable within one year of employment).
• Certified in HAZ-MAT awareness or equivalent that meets Act 45 (or obtain certification within one year of employment).
• Certified in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) or obtain certification within one year of employment.

Physical Demands

• Must be in excellent physical health with no medical disabilities that would impair EMT duties.
• Considerable lifting and moving of heavy patients (up to 100 lbs).
• Ability to extricate patients in hazardous environments.
• Work involves considerable hazards, including explosions, anoxic environments, violent patients, and potential fire risks.

Work Environment

The work environment is typically very loud. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and occasionally in high, precarious places. Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, vibration, and unrestricted secondhand tobacco smoke may occur.

Initial placement within the salary range is based on an individual's relevant knowledge, skills, and experience.
