Paramedic

About the role

Provide pre-hospital and intra-hospital advanced life support care to patients who are ill or injured in emergency situations until care is relinquished to an acceptable medical facility; conduct initial patient assessment, prioritize prompt and efficient patient care, and transport patients per Base Hospital protocols. The position may require temporary relocation to TONHC facilities including Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, and San Xavier Health Center.

Responsibilities

• Independently conduct a complete patient assessment and identify signs and symptoms of life-threatening versus non-life-threatening trauma and medical conditions.
• Treat trauma and medical emergencies using advanced knowledge of topographic anatomy, major body systems, and Arizona Department of Health Services approved protocols.
• Assess the scene, triage patients, perform primary and secondary assessments, and request additional personnel as needed.
• Respond to and return from emergency calls using advanced knowledge of local road systems, traffic, road, and weather conditions; safely operate emergency and patient transport vehicles under all conditions.
• Determine appropriate EMS transport modalities based on patient needs while ensuring safety.
• Perform vehicle maintenance including decontamination, supply replacement, cleaning, and minor repairs.
• Use radio equipment per FCC procedures; communicate orally and in writing with medical and ancillary personnel; transmit EKG information to treatment facilities.
• Assist with moving, lifting, and carrying patients; treat fractures, dislocations, sprains, eye injuries, cardiac abnormalities, diabetic complications, and renal function issues.
• Aid in extrication from wrecked vehicles and other entrapments; participate in mass casualty incident management, disaster operations, and hazardous materials response.
• Move and operate rescue equipment alone within the first year of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
• Extensive skill in emergency communication techniques and operating communication equipment.
• Advanced emergency medicine techniques including manual defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, and other ACLS skills.
• Knowledge of topographic anatomy and major body systems to perform examinations and provide patient care.
• Understanding of legal considerations of emergency care, Privacy Act of 1974, and HIPAA.
• Skill operating emergency and patient transport vehicles under all weather and traffic conditions.
• Ability to work with patients of all ages and recognize medical, environmental, obstetrical, traumatic, and surgical emergencies.
• Ability to lift, move, and position patients; perform triage and mass casualty incident management.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
• One year of experience as a Paramedic.
• Current Paramedic Level Emergency Medical Technician certification with the State of Arizona.
• Maintain current Paramedic (EMCT-P) certification in Arizona and current CPR, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
• Pass drug and alcohol testing; subject to random drug testing.
• Pass criminal background and National FBI fingerprint check; maintain a 39-month driving record with no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license meeting Tohono O’odham Nation tribal employer’s insurance requirements.
• May require fluency in both Tohono O’odham and English.
