Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform necessary medical care on sick, injured and convalescent persons.
- Stabilize the condition at the highest level of EMS care available in the State of Maryland.
- Assist in the extrication of victims from wreckage and entrapment.
- Perform triage and/or assign and take medical command at major incidents.
- Supervise and/or perform emergency medical first aid examinations and assessments.
- Supervise and/or perform Basic Life Support treatment such as bandage wounds, controls bleeding, spinal immobilization, recognize and treat life threatening arrhythmias, insertion of intravenous and intraosseous lines, intubation, administration of a variety of medications, insertion or oral and nasal airways, needle decompression, suctioning, application of MAST and other skills.
- Be extremely familiar with Maryland Protocols and how they relate to the above skills.
- Complete and file all pertinent state, county, local and hospital reports and related documents.
- Recommend procedural changes when needed based on field experience and qualifications.
- Test and evaluate new education classes.
- Establish and supervise rehabilitation at incidents.
- Aid fire companies with medical support.
- Must be able to operate emergency vehicles in accordance with County driving procedures and EMS SOPs.
- Quickly and accurately utilize maps and obtain information pertinent to the emergency response.
- Absorb the responsibility for the constant readiness of emergency vehicles while on duty.
- Perform quality assurance reviews of career and part-time peer paramedics and CRTs and may assist in quality assurance review of EMS providers as requested by the Medical Director.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- This is a skilled technical and responsible work as a Nationally Registered and Maryland Certified Paramedic or Maryland Certified Cardiac Rescue Technician with five years of active experience.
- A self-motivated, responsible person with administrative duties.
- Under some supervision, carries out duties without detailed instructions, but within specific limits and reports periodically based on previously agreed upon goals.
- Cardiac Rescue Technicians working as a Paramedic will have one year from date of hire to be a Nationally Registered and Maryland Certified Paramedic.
- Ability to perform exertional tasks associated with the position.
- Must have excellent moral character.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from other health care providers, supervisors, patients and the general public.
- Must be able to apply the principles of logical thinking to a wide range of practical problems.
- Must have the ability to use sound judgment while quickly and logically analyzing problems, often under emotional stress.
- Ability to deal with people and situations in a sensitive manner that reflects the rights of others.
- Must have considerable knowledge of the EMS principles, practices and techniques.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of Maryland Medical Protocols.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of Maryland Medical Protocols.
- Must have the ability to operate a personal computer and other office equipment.
- Ability to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
- Frequent use of the hands, manipulate and feel objects and equipment, to reach, pull/push, to talk and hear.
- Frequently required to sit, climb, stoop, run, kneel and walk while carrying weight.
- Occasionally required to jump from 1 – 2 feet, crawl and smell are required.
- Frequent lifting and/or moving objects in excess of 100 pounds is required.
- Must have good close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception and must be able to adjust focus. Vision can be corrected with contact lenses/eye glasses.
- Must not suffer from claustrophobia.

- Regular exposure to risk of infection.
- Sometimes working near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, in outside weather conditions.
- Sometimes exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock and vibration.
- Sometimes exposed to moderate or loud noise levels such as sirens, air and gasoline powered equipment and helicopter engine noise.

- REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- - Valid Driver’s License with no more than 3 current points
- - Nationally Registered and Maryland Certified Paramedic or Maryland CRT
- - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- - Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support
- - Basic trauma Life Support
- - Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation
- - Clinical Field Instructor strongly recommended
