Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative, transactional, litigation, and research support to solicitor generals.
  • Researches and drafts legal pleadings, including letters, motions, orders, complaints, subpoenas, and appeal briefs.
  • Drafts indictments and accusations.
  • Collaborates with the Muscogee County Sheriff regarding scheduling and transportation of inmates in the Muscogee County Sheriff’s custody for State Court appearances.
  • Affords support to Open Records Act matters, including redacting, reviewing, and copying documents.
  • Monitors open and closed cases handled by each Assistant Solicitor General.
  • Attends court to record depositions during arraignment, guilty pleas, and trials.
  • Assists the Solicitor General with administrative tasks as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of state and federal law.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, forms, and filing procedures.
  • Knowledge of legal research methods.
  • Knowledge of court rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of legislative processes.
  • Ability to conduct legal research.
  • Ability to organize work and maintain complex records.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Proficiency in using office equipment such as a typewriter, facsimile machine, and copier.
  • Proficiency in using computers and standard and specialized software applications.
  • Proficiency in utilizing computerized legal reference resources.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.

Minimum Educational and Training Requirements

  • Completion of a Certified Paralegal program from an accredited institution.
  • Or a combination of a college degree (in any field) and at least five years of experience in law office management, assisting attorneys or judges as clerks or paralegals, or similar administrative law experience.

Physical Requirements

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.
  • Employee must occasionally lift light objects.
  • Physical abilities required include:

    • Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
    • Standing – for sustained periods of time.
    • Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.
    • Talking 1 – express ideas by spoken word.
    • Visual Acuity 1 – prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
    • Visual Acuity 2 – color, depth perception, field of vision.
    • Visual Acuity 3 – determine accuracy, neatness, observe facilities/structures.
    • Visual Acuity 4 – operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
    • Walking – on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
