Works under the direction of a Supervisory Legal Assistant to support criminal or civil cases.
Responsibilities
- Review files and documents to become familiar with case issues and identify pertinent material.
- Establish and maintain an effective system for compiling, indexing, and organizing case information and sources.
- Participate in trial preparation by compiling, organizing, and indexing trial documents.
- Mark and identify trial documents and draft lists of documents offered at trial.
- Perform legal tasks including copying, mailing, closing files, maintaining pleadings, and managing a calendar system for assigned attorneys to track deadlines for pleadings, hearings, court appearances, and meetings.
- Maintain organized, current, accessible, and retrievable electronic case files while ensuring data integrity in the case management system.
- Search and extract legal references from libraries and computer databases.
- Review and summarize case precedent and decisions in a prescribed format.
- Assist Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs) by preparing, scheduling, reviewing, and organizing discovery, as well as notifying and managing witnesses.
- Aid in organizing evidence for discovery production and trial use.
- Perform basic legal research using tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
- Cite-check legal motions and memoranda using standard legal citation.
- Utilize eDiscovery procedures and resources, including familiarity with ESI tools.
Requirements
- Must be able to obtain and maintain MRPT facility credentials/authorization (U.S. citizenship required).
- Paralegal certificate, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school with at least one year of study completed.
- One year of legal training or legal experience, or at least two years of college education may substitute for the paralegal certificate.
- At least one year of litigation paralegal experience or related project experience; trial experience is highly valued.
- Automated litigation support experience is a plus.
- Basic legal knowledge, including standard legal citation.
- Proficiency with computer applications, including word processing, databases (e.g., document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to deliver high-quality work under extreme pressure.
Pay
$19.81 per hour (overtime-eligible). This position falls under the Service Contract Act (SCA), which may provide an additional health and welfare payment per hour worked, depending on selected fringe benefits.
