About the role

This position supports the Department of Health’s mission to protect and improve the health of people in Washington State by delivering high-quality legal services to the Washington State Board of Nursing (WABON).

Responsibilities

  • Drafts and/or finalizes complex legal documents, including Statements of Charges, Agreed Orders, Statements of Allegations, Stipulations to Informal Dispositions, Default/Waiver Orders, Summary Motions, Motions for Non-Compliance, Modification/Reinstatement Orders, Interim Orders, and Notices of Decision.
  • Prepares notices, proposed orders, declarations, affidavits, pre-hearing memoranda, and related correspondence.
  • Ensures legal documents conform to appropriate citation format and Department policies and procedures.
  • Reviews answers to discovery for completeness and accuracy.
  • Analyzes complex case fact patterns for legal issue identification and staff attorney review.
  • Provides file-specific factual research for Assistant Attorneys General.
  • Provides initial review of modification and reinstatement matters.
  • Exercises independent judgment to resolve issues and advance case progression.
  • Selects and organizes exhibits for attorney review and signature.
  • Prepares and organizes documentation for discovery, public disclosure, and subpoena requests.
  • Associates and maintains legal, hearing, and compliance files with accuracy and integrity.
  • Presents case reviews to disciplinary authorities seeking approval for action or closure.
  • Supports adjudicative proceedings consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Provides direct legal and procedural support to WABON staff attorneys.

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years as a paralegal or legal assistant (legal secretary) in a legal environment in support of an attorney, administrative law judge, or review judge.
  • An Associate’s degree that includes coursework in paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field AND two (2) years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant (legal secretary).
  • A Bachelor’s degree that includes paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field AND One (1) year of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant (legal secretary).

Pay

The salary range listed reflects the 2% general wage increase scheduled to take effect July 1, 2026.

Schedule

This position has a work schedule of 40 hours per week; however, the position may be expected to work longer hours to complete projects or assignments, and/or meet business demands and deadlines, and/or during the annual legislative session. An alternative or flexible work schedule may be considered at the incumbent's request, subject to supervisory approval.
