About the Role
To assist a certificated teacher(s) in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students by performing a variety of instructional support activities. This includes maintaining an effective learning environment and performing clerical duties as assigned. Employees in this role work with students who may qualify for Special Services under any of the 13 federal Special Education eligibility categories, including Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism, Other Health Impairments, Intellectual Disabilities, and Emotional Disabilities.
Responsibilities
- Assists teacher(s) in instructing individuals and/or small groups of students in basic academic, vocational, and/or specialized subject areas; tutors students as assigned.
- Helps implement curriculum for assigned area(s) of instruction under the guidance of a certified teacher.
- Supervises students to maintain an effective learning environment, noting behavioral problems and disciplining when necessary.
- Organizes assigned learning/instructional environments (e.g., classrooms, learning/testing centers, computer/science laboratories, child care centers) by maintaining bulletin boards, issuing/retrieving equipment/materials, and ensuring neat and orderly spaces.
- Prepares instructional materials, including copying, collating, stapling, and hole-punching quizzes, tests, and worksheets; gathers resources and sets up equipment as assigned.
- Provides feedback to teachers and administrators on students’ progress through observation, daily contact, and maintaining accurate records.
- Participates in parent/family meetings as assigned.
- Administers and scores tests, daily assignments, and homework.
- Maintains informational and operational records/files, including test/homework scores, attendance, meal counts, student work folders, and equipment/supplies records.
- Monitors and assists students using equipment such as computer terminals, printers, industrial education equipment, and cassette recorders.
- Monitors, inventories, orders, and maintains instructional supplies and equipment.
- Takes daily attendance and prepares attendance forms/reports.
- Prepares answer keys for worksheets and tests.
- Contacts parents regarding absences, meetings, scheduling, and information verification.
- Escorts students to/from classrooms/learning centers on campus tours, field trips, etc.; issues student passes.
- Performs clerical tasks such as typing, filing, answering phones, and taking messages.
- Translates written/oral information, assignments, letters, and forms for students, parents, and staff as assigned.
- Obtains, prepares, and sets up food for child care center participants as assigned.
Requirements
- Equivalent of two years of full-time college (at least 48-semester units) OR passing the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) test.
- Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved organization (see CTC-approved agencies).
- Successful candidates must pass fingerprint clearance and provide official sealed transcripts.
- Bilingual candidates preferred.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
- Understanding of the general needs and behaviors of students.
- Ability to learn methods and procedures for assigned instructional situations.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions independently.
- Ability to understand and address the needs of assigned students in a learning environment.
- Ability to learn the requirements of specific learning programs.
- Ability to analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action.
- Ability to supervise students in various situations.
- Ability to maintain accurate classroom/center records and files.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to operate standard office and instructional equipment (e.g., typewriter, copier, scantron, computer terminal).
- Typing accuracy at a rate required for successful job performance.
- Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
- May require ability to speak, read, and write a specified foreign language.
Pay
- Range 7: $21.28/hour – $27.19/hour (with 30 college semester units)
- Range 8: $21.87/hour – $27.84/hour (with 60 college semester units OR Associate’s Degree)
- Range 9: $22.37/hour – $28.55/hour (with 90 college semester units)
- Range 10: $22.94/hour – $29.27/hour (with Bachelor’s Degree)
