About the Role
To assist a certificated teacher(s) in the instruction, supervision, and training of individual or groups of students by performing a variety of instructional support activities. This includes maintaining an effective learning environment and performing clerical duties as assigned. Employees in this role work with students who may qualify for Special Services under any of the 13 federal Special Education eligibility categories, including Specific Learning Disabilities, Autism, Other Health Impairments, Intellectual Disabilities, and Emotional Disabilities.
Responsibilities
- Assists teacher(s) in instructing individuals and/or small groups of students in basic academic, vocational, and/or specialized subject areas; tutors students as assigned.
- Implements curriculum for assigned area(s) of instruction under the direction of a certified teacher.
- Supervises students to maintain an effective learning environment, noting behavioral problems and disciplining when necessary.
- Organizes assigned learning and/or instructional environments, including classrooms, learning/testing centers, computer/science laboratories, and child care centers; maintains bulletin boards, issues and retrieves equipment/materials, and ensures neat and orderly instructional areas.
- Prepares instructional materials, including copying, collating, stapling, and hole-punching quizzes, tests, and worksheets; gathers resource materials and sets up equipment as assigned.
- Provides feedback and information on students’ progress through observation, daily contact, and maintaining accurate student records.
- Participates in parent/family meetings as assigned.
- Administers and scores tests, daily assignments, and homework.
- Maintains informational and operational records, including test/homework scores, attendance, meal counts, student work folders, and records related to books, materials, equipment, and supplies.
- Monitors and assists students using equipment such as computer terminals, printers, controlled readers, industrial education equipment, and cassette recorders.
- Monitors, inventories, orders, and maintains instructional supplies and equipment.
- Takes daily attendance and prepares appropriate attendance forms/reports.
- Prepares answer keys for worksheets and tests.
- Contacts parents regarding absences, meetings, appointment scheduling, and to verify/obtain information.
- Escorts students to and from classrooms/learning centers on orientation campus tours, field trips, etc.; issues student passes.
- Performs clerical tasks, including typing, filing, answering telephones, and taking messages.
- Translates written/oral information, assignments, letters, and forms for students, parents, and staff as assigned.
- Obtains, prepares, and sets up food for child care center participants as assigned.
Requirements
- Must have the equivalent of two years of full-time college (at least 48-semester units) OR pass the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) test.
- A copy of transcripts is required as an attachment to your online application, or you must pass the NCLB test.
- Foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved organization. List of approved evaluators.
- Successful candidates must pass fingerprint clearance and provide official sealed transcripts.
- Bilingual candidates preferred.

- Ability to speak, read, and write a specified foreign language may be required.
Pay
- Range 7: $21.28/hour – $27.19/hour (with 30 college semester units)
- Range 8: $21.87/hour – $27.84/hour (with 60 college semester units or Associate’s Degree)
- Range 9: $22.37/hour – $28.55/hour (with 90 college semester units)
- Range 10: $22.94/hour – $29.27/hour (with Bachelor’s Degree)
