Paraeducator Moderate/Severe
About the role
The Paraeducator Moderate/Severe position at FCUSD is designed to assist students with severe disabilities in meeting their physical and emotional needs during the instructional day. This role involves assisting teachers with record-keeping and performing various instructional support duties, including the development of life skills and physical care activities.
Responsibilities
- Assists students with severe disabilities in meeting their physical and emotional requirements throughout the instructional day.
- Aids in the development of life skills and physical care activities under the supervision of a classroom teacher.
- Performs a variety of instructional support duties as directed by the teacher.
- Works independently in some areas, but the teacher retains responsibility for instruction and supervision.
- May spend a substantial portion of time providing intervention to students exhibiting disruptive, aggressive, depressive, and/or self-injurious behaviors.
Requirements
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; courses and/or in-service in psychology, behavior modification, and other related fields desirable but not required. Willingness to complete such training courses upon employment.
- Experience: Prefer experience in the care of children with learning disabilities and/or emotional disturbances. Training in crisis intervention is highly desirable.
Qualifications
- Must pass a DOJ and FBI Criminal Background Check.
- Must complete a TB test within the last 60 days.
- Must complete district mandated reporter training, including sexual harassment.
- Must obtain and maintain a First Aid/CPR Certificate (in-person training only).
- Must undergo a pre-employment physical evaluation conducted by the District (minimum 50 pounds).
Significant Physical Abilities
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- Sufficient strength to lift non-ambulatory students.
- Lift and move adaptive equipment.
- Physically restrain and control a student up to 200 pounds with assistance.
- Sufficient body movement and mobility to demonstrate gross motor activities.
- Climb in and out of cars, vans, and buses.
- Walk and run with students.
- Climb well enough to go up and down stairs.
- Maneuver students into and out of vehicles, wheelchairs, and toilets.
- Sufficient vision to read printed material.
- Sufficient hearing to hear normal and telephone conversations.
- Manual dexterity to write and use telephone and other business/office machines.
