About the Role

The Paraeducator II - Special Education (Physical Disabilities) assists (under direct supervision) in the supervision and instruction of special education students, relieves teachers of routine clerical tasks, and provides for special health care needs of students. This role is distinguished from Paraeducator I by its focus on assisting students in special programs, including special day and resource programs for students with identified mental, emotional, physical, or learning handicaps.

This is an itinerant position covering special education paraeducator needs at various sites throughout the District as notified by Smart Find Express and/or the Special Education Department.

Responsibilities

• Assists certificated teachers in classroom operations, including teaching academic skills to students with mental, emotional, physical, or learning disabilities.
• Supervises students to maintain an effective learning environment, noting behavioral issues and assisting with discipline within established policies.
• Prepares instructional materials and equipment; types, copies, and gathers resources as assigned.
• Provides feedback to teaching staff and administrators on student progress through observation and maintaining accurate records.
• Administers and corrects tests, assignments, and homework.
• Assists in maintaining informational and operational records, reporting and tracking student progress.
• Monitors and assists students using equipment such as computer terminals, cassette recorders, and audio-visual media.
• Oversees inventories and orders instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
• Supervises students during classroom activities, on campus, in the library, and on field trips.
• Operates instructional media, office machines, and equipment.
• Tutors students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning activities.
• May assist in self-contained instructional settings and track progress for individual students in core academic subjects.
• Assists other personnel as required to support their work activities.
• Participates in meetings to share information and improve skills/knowledge.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Prior job-related experience (paid or volunteer) with school-age children.
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, negative pre-employment drug screen, and negative TB test results.
• Pass the District’s adopted Proficiency Examination with a satisfactory score.
• First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificates may be required.

Skills & Qualifications

• Skills: Perform basic clerical functions, arithmetic calculations, operate standard office equipment, use English in written and verbal form with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Provide for special health care needs of students.
• Knowledge: Principles of child development, instructional processes, goals of public education, student testing and procedures.
• Abilities: Understand and address students with special needs, follow oral and written instructions, maintain confidentiality of student records, meet schedules and deadlines, interpret and apply rules and policies, learn methods and materials used in instructional situations.
• Physical Abilities: Stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity, depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision.

Incumbents are encouraged to participate in courses, seminars, and workshops in instructional services, psychology, or guidance.

Pay

Pay Range: $18.882 - $24.852 per hour (Range 15). Maximum salary achieved over 8 annual steps. Prorated health and welfare benefits included.

Schedule

• 6 hours per day, 182 days per year.
• Part-time employment.
• Shift: 7:45 a.m. – 2:15 p.m. (Shift hours may vary within 60 minutes).
