About the Role

This recruitment establishes an eligibility list for anticipated vacancies during the 2026-2027 school year. Selected candidates will provide instructional assistance to individual or small groups of students in a classroom or other learning environment, and assist in the supervision of students during class, lunch, or play.

Requirements

  • Possession of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent.
  • One of the following:
    • Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education;
    • Possession of an associate's (or higher) degree; or
    • Passing a rigorous assessment demonstrating knowledge and ability to assist in instruction of reading, writing, and mathematics at State and Federal requirements.
  • Applicants may be exempt from the NCLB examination by providing college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of "C" or better. Transcripts must be submitted with the application.
  • If an applicant does not possess enough units to be exempt, they must attach a letter requesting an examination date to their application.
  • Copy of transcript (college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of "C" or better) OR a letter requesting to take the NCLB examination if transcripts are unavailable.

General Employment Conditions

  • Subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance.
  • Submit to a general tuberculosis examination.
  • Be fingerprinted.
  • Complete a pre-placement physical examination.
  • Show proof of identity and right to work in the United States.
  • Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results from drug testing (District has a drug-free workplace policy).

Examination and Eligibility

Candidates will be notified of their status around the close of the posting. Those who possess the necessary qualifications will be invited to test to get on the eligibility list for hire. The eligibility list will be used to fill vacancies within the next 6 months during the 2026-2027 school year.

  • Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination process will be ranked on the eligibility list according to total examination score. This list is normally in effect for one year.
  • When a vacant position is to be filled, the Classified Personnel Director submits the names of the top three “ranks” to the appointing power, who may select any one of them. Names of those not appointed remain on the eligibility list.
  • Employee service credit: Regular employees of Escondido Union School District receive a credit of one half point (.5) for each complete year of service, up to a maximum of five (5) points, added to their final composite scores.
  • Veterans and disabled veterans preference points, as defined in Education Code Section 45296, shall be added to passing scores in an open examination on entry-level classifications.

Probation and Professional Growth

  • Newly appointed employees serve an initial probationary period not to exceed six months or 130 days of paid service, whichever is longer.
  • After one year of service, regular classified employees may earn additional salary increments for improving skills through continuing education.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance Plan: Employees working 5 hours or more per day (25 hours or more per week) receive family medical coverage, employee life and vision, and employee or family dental coverage.
  • Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for 16 authorized holidays (for twelve-month employees), provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
  • Longevity Pay: Increments are added to the employee’s base pay rate, effective July 1, after completing the required years of service:
    • 9 years: 3.5%
    • 14 years: 7.123%
    • 19 years: 12.158%
    • 24 years: 16.644%
    • 29 years: 21.310%
    • 34 years: 26.162%
    • 39 years: 31.209%
    • 44 years: 36.457%
    • 49 years: 41.915%
    • 54 years: 47.592%
    • 59 years: 53.495%
  • Sick Leave: Regular full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid sick leave per year, with no limit on accumulation. Sick leave is prorated for employees working less than twelve months.
  • Vacation: Regular full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid vacation leave per year. After 5 years of service, the number of days earned increases. Vacation is prorated for employees working less than twelve months.
  • Retirement: All new employees working four hours or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are made by both the District and employees. Employees working less than half-time have full retirement coverage under Social Security.
  • Shift Differential: Employees required to work more than four hours of their regular shift (non-overtime) between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. receive a 3.75% pay increase for the entirety of each applicable day. The shift differential is split into equal payments based on the months paid per year.
