Requirements

Possession of a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent and one of the following:

  • Completion of at least two years of study (minimum 48 semester hours) at an institution of higher education;
  • Possession of an associate's (or higher) degree; or
  • Passing a rigorous assessment that demonstrates the knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instruction, reading, writing, and mathematics at a level meeting State and Federal requirements.

Applicants may be exempt from taking the NCLB examination if they provide college transcripts verifying 48 units or more in core subject area courses with a grade of "C" or better. Transcripts must be submitted with the application. If an applicant does not possess enough units to be exempt, they must attach to their application a letter requesting an examination date.

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications are required to take a writing assessment examination regardless of meeting the NCLB requirements. Applicants must attach either transcripts or a letter requesting an examination date to submit their application.

General Requirements

  • Subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance;
  • Submit to a general tuberculosis examination;
  • Be fingerprinted;
  • Complete a pre-placement physical examination;
  • Show proof of identity and right to work in the United States;
  • Comply with the District’s drug-free workplace policy (employment contingent upon satisfactory drug testing results).

To be considered qualified, applicants must possess the relevant training, education, and experience, and attain placement on the eligibility list by successfully passing all examination parts.

Certification & Eligibility

  • Certification: When filling a vacancy, the Classified Personnel Director submits the names of the top three ranked candidates to the appointing authority, who may select any one of them. Unselected names remain on the eligibility list.
  • Eligibility List: Candidates who complete all phases of the application and examination process are ranked based on their total examination score. The list remains in effect for six months.
  • Employee Service Credit: Regular employees of Escondido Union School District receive a credit of 0.5 points for each complete year of service (up to a maximum of 5 points) added to their final composite scores in open examinations.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance Plan: Employees working 5+ hours per day (25+ hours per week) receive family medical coverage, employee life and vision insurance, and employee or family dental coverage.
  • Holidays: Regular classified employees receive pay for 16 authorized holidays per year (for twelve-month employees), provided they were in paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
  • Longevity Pay: Increments are added to base pay effective July 1 after completing the required years of service:
    • 9 years: 3.5%
    • 14 years: 7.123%
    • 19 years: 12.158%
    • 24 years: 16.644%
    • 29 years: 21.310%
    • 34 years: 26.162%
    • 39 years: 31.209%
    • 44 years: 36.457%
    • 49 years: 41.915%
    • 54 years: 47.592%
    • 59 years: 53.495%
  • Professional Growth: After one year of service, regular classified employees may earn additional salary increments for improving skills through continuing education.
  • Retirement: Employees working 4+ hours per day must enroll in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) and Social Security. The District and employees contribute to these programs.
  • Shift Differential: Employees required to work more than four hours of their regular shift (non-overtime) between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m. receive a 3.75% pay increase for the entirety of each applicable day.
  • Sick Leave: Full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid sick leave annually, with no limit on accumulation. Sick leave is prorated for employees working fewer than twelve months.
  • Vacation: Full-time twelve-month employees earn 12 days of paid vacation annually, with increased days after 5 years of service. Vacation is prorated for employees working fewer than twelve months.
  • Veterans Preference: Veterans and disabled veterans receive preference points added to passing scores in open examinations for entry-level classifications, as defined by Education Code Section 45296.

Probationary Period

Newly appointed regular-status employees serve a probationary period not exceeding six months or 130 days of paid service (whichever is longer). Paid service includes days worked, approved vacation, and designated holidays but excludes sick leave, personal necessity, bereavement, personal business, and limited-duty assignments due to temporary disability.
