About the Role

Perform tasks of applying protective coatings for the purpose of protection and beautification.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation and painting:
    • Interior – Removes furniture and wall hangings. Protect permanent fixtures. Tape off baseboards, chair rails and windowsills. Place drop cloths on the floors for protection. Patch walls as needed. Clean the vents, diffusers and ceiling grid. Wash the walls and trim. Apply primer and finish coats of paint.
    • Exterior – Prepare the substrate by power washing, scraping, sanding, scarifying or sandblasting. Replace and glaze the broken glass. Apply primer and finish coats of paint.
  • Rigging – Erects and uses stationary scaffolding, mobile scaffolding, suspension scaffolding, boatswain’s chair, window jack scaffold, ladders, ladder jacks, pick boards, and man lifts. Responsible for the security and maintenance of all painting equipment such as brushes, rollers, drop cloths, ladders, spray equipment, scaffolding, man lifts, etc.
  • Layout and stripe parking lots and streets.
  • Fabricate and install signage (hand lettering, stencils, silk screening, vinyl, engraving, etc.).
  • Tape and finish drywall.
  • Fabricate and install aluminum storefronts.
  • Cut and install glass for windows, doors, desktops and fume hoods.
  • Apply window films.
  • Install wallpaper, vinyl, foil, grass cloth and wall liners.
  • Remove graffiti.
  • Train painter apprentices.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Receives work assignments from Foreperson/Sub-foreperson or Director Building Maintenance & Grounds or Superintendents.
  • Work is inspected by the Building Maintenance Painter Foreperson or Sub-Foreperson.
  • May work from roof, ladder, scaffold or stage.
  • May work while wearing a respirator.
  • May work when exposed to vehicular traffic.
  • May work at heights, depths, confined spaces, noisy areas and in inclement weather.
  • May work at heights on platforms or hung above tall ceilings.
  • May work amid hazards of work sites such as dust, noise, and in areas such as coal fired power plants, animal rooms, and laboratories.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journey-level painter experience.
  • Possession of a valid State of Illinois driver’s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.

Skills

  • Proper use and care of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of tools needed to complete a job assignment.
  • Working knowledge of safety procedures.
  • Sufficient knowledge of the trade and ability to communicate and assist in the training of apprentices.
  • Ability to estimate the amount of material used to complete a task.

Pay

Starting salary is $40.96/hour.

Schedule

This is a 100% full-time position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 9/14/2026.
