Division: HAS Small Construction — Maintenance

About the role

The Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance Painter (Interior) reports to the Division Manager of Small Construction and Build Back Services. This role ensures facilities, equipment, structures, and utilities across the three HAS airports are constructed, installed, and maintained to maximize value for customers. Work is performed using innovative engineering and financial principles. Candidates must be able to obtain all required security badge access, including Custom Border Patrol access, within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and implements work orders and assignments.
  • Identifies, prepares, and obtains required materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Performs general painting, restoration, and refinishing techniques (e.g., spray and brush painting, varnishing, priming, scraping, floating, and taping).
  • Repairs damaged surfaces.
  • Mixes and blends paint to match colors.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work area.

Working Conditions

The position involves considerable physical exertion, including regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds), and assuming awkward positions for extended periods. Routine exposure to heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution is expected. Periodic exposure to chemical substances and minor physical trauma (e.g., cuts, bruises, burns) may occur. Requires closely coordinated eye/hand movements with fine tolerances or rapid responses.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, add, subtract, and follow oral/written instructions (typically acquired through 9–11 years of formal schooling).
  • Two years of experience as a painter.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with the City of Houston’s driving policy.
  • May require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an "H" endorsement for transporting hazardous materials.

Preferences

  • Experience in wood finishing, industrial painting, and drywall.
  • Knowledge of associated building trades (e.g., sheetrock, glazing).
  • Proficiency in mixing/matching paints, cleaning supplies, and applying paints, varnishes, stains, and enamels.
  • Preference given to eligible veteran applicants meeting qualifications.

Pay

Pay Grade: 11. Salary is determined by candidate qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification.
