ELECTRICIAN - Bush Airport

This position is within the Houston Airport System (HAS) Maintenance – General Maintenance Services Business Unit, responsible for delivering self-performed maintenance services across IAH, HOU, and EFD airports. The role ensures airport facilities, infrastructure, equipment, and related assets remain safe, reliable, functional, and operational.

About the role

The Electrician performs journeyman-level electrical work, maintaining terminal and support buildings' electrical distribution equipment, lighting systems, and various electrical devices in accordance with NEC, NFPA, and FAA Advisory Circulars. This position acts as a first responder to emergency calls for electrical failures and shutdowns, troubleshooting circuits, tripped breakers, and overloaded circuits. Responsibilities include managing Airside and landside lighting for terminals, surrounding buildings, street pole lights, and airfield lighting systems. Candidates must obtain all required security badge access, including Custom Border Patrol access, within 6 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot, maintain, manage, and upgrade existing electromechanical and electronic installations and systems.
• Research and analyze causes of failures; repair, replace, and install new equipment/components and related hardware.
• Provide preventive maintenance to ensure safe and clean operating conditions.
• Prepare and update records, logs, and reports related to work performed.
• Respond to emergency calls for electrical failures and shutdowns.
• Organize, schedule, and monitor work assignments.
• Research technical product specifications and evaluate vendor product prices to determine competitive bids.
• Assist in inventory control management of electrical parts and components.
• Inspect field locations to determine appropriate types and placement of electrical components for installation.

Work Environment

This role involves considerable physical exertion, including regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds), and assuming awkward positions for extended periods. Exposure to extreme temperatures, air pollution, noise, chemical gases, contagious diseases, or physical trauma may occur. Requires closely coordinated eye/hand movements with fine tolerances, rapid responses, or operation of large equipment.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED certificate.
• Completion of an apprentice electrician program approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training or equivalent recognized by the Electrical Safety and Licensing Advisory Board.
• Valid State of Texas Journeyman Electrician License.
• Valid Texas driver’s license; compliance with the City of Houston’s driving policy.
• May require a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Ability to obtain all security badge access, including Custom Border Patrol access, within 6 months of hire.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with:

• 5+ years of Journeyman Electrician experience.
• Ability to interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics, and design specifications.
• Knowledge of National Electrical Codes and experience with electrical tools, meters, and materials in a commercial setting.
• Experience with high voltage (15 KV), primary distribution, emergency generators, control systems, preventative maintenance programs, UPS, and PLC.
• Knowledge of airfield lighting materials and applications.
• A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Eligible veteran status, provided qualifications meet position requirements.

Pay

Pay Grade: 18. Salary is determined based on candidate qualifications and pay rates of other employees in this classification.

This position is subject to random drug testing. If a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
