Paint Technician Job Summary

As a CPI Paint Technician, you will play a crucial role in the production of products that power, protect, and secure the world's digital technology. Your responsibilities include setting up and operating equipment, applying powder base paint, troubleshooting equipment, conducting preventative maintenance, and ensuring quality control.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

  • Frequent standing, walking, carrying, lifting, stooping, and crouching.
  • Work with powder coat materials and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to wear a respirator which is a required PPE.
  • Lift up to 40 lbs.

Qualifications

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Under minimal supervision, sets up powder coat and related equipment to engineering specifications, and prepares equipment for production.
  • Uses spray gun to apply powder base paint to products.
  • Troubleshoots equipment problems and attempts to resolve before getting maintenance involved.
  • Conducts higher level periodic preventative maintenance on paint equipment as required by the preventative maintenance program.
  • Observes machine gauges and equipment operation to detect defects or deviations from standards and makes necessary adjustments.
  • Determines paint flow, viscosity and coating quality by performing visual inspections or by using viscometers.
  • Turns dials, handwheels, valves or switches to regulate conveyor speeds, machine temperature, air pressure and circulation, and the flow of paint.
  • Operates auxiliary equipment used in the painting process to include the wash tank and oven.
  • Inspects and maintains equipment for compliance with safety requirements, including but not limited to all guarding. Corrects any safety issues prior to operating the equipment.
  • Inspects coated items for paint coverage and tests for coating thickness. Applies consistent mil paint thicknesses.
  • Sets up and operates equipment to paint products with powder coat.
  • May assist in the transition of new products into manufacturing.
  • Assists operators by answering questions and demonstrating operations.
  • Spot checks products to ensure quality levels are maintained.
  • Cleans booth between color changes to prevent cross contamination.
  • Applies consistent mil paint thicknesses.
  • Resolves quality and mechanical problems, making minor repairs and equipment adjustments as needed.
  • Performs paint color changeovers.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment.
  • Records operational data on specified forms to track downtime, efficiency and quality checks.
  • Assists and trains others to paint.
  • Works from blueprints, engineering specifications and production schedules.
  • Performs pretreatment chemical titration of wash tank.

Additional Functions

  • Continuously maintains a clean work area.
  • Disposes of trash and production scrap.
  • Assists in cleaning common areas.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned by management.

Technical Competencies

  • High school or equivalent education preferred.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of related experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints and engineering specifications to properly select parts.
  • Capable of using measuring devices as required for product inspection.
  • Good mechanical skills including the use of hand tools.
  • Good troubleshooting skills such that, after a reasonable training period, the employee will be able to evaluate operational problems of the equipment and know the proper corrective actions.
  • Ability to read and understand equipment operating, maintenance, and troubleshooting manuals.
