About the role
The City Planner is a key position within the Planning Division, responsible for performing professional planning work in the development, implementation, and administration of the City’s comprehensive plan, zoning ordinances, and other land use regulations. This role involves reviewing development proposals, providing recommendations to the Planning Commission and City Council, and working with developers, property owners, and the public to ensure compliance with city planning goals and policies.
Responsibilities
- Review and process development applications, including site plans, subdivisions, rezonings, and variances.
- Provide professional planning recommendations to the Planning Commission, City Council, and other boards and commissions.
- Prepare and present staff reports, ordinances, and other planning documents.
- Conduct research and analysis on planning issues, including land use, transportation, housing, and environmental concerns.
- Assist in the preparation and implementation of the City’s comprehensive plan, zoning ordinances, and other planning policies.
- Coordinate with other city departments, agencies, and external stakeholders on planning-related projects.
- Provide planning and zoning information to the public, developers, and other interested parties.
- Participate in long-range planning efforts, including updates to the comprehensive plan and other planning documents.
- Attend meetings, workshops, and public hearings as required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional planning experience, preferably in a municipal setting.
- Knowledge of planning principles, practices, and techniques, including land use regulations, zoning, and comprehensive planning.
- Experience with GIS software and other planning-related tools.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear and concise reports and presentations.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including elected officials, city staff, developers, and the public.
- Certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred but not required.
Skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and other planning-related applications.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
