About the role

The Packer is responsible for maintaining production lines running efficiently and ensuring all products are packaged according to specifications and guidelines. The role involves job rotations within the shift, including manual packaging, sealing product, organizing product into boxes, placing product on pallets, and operating pallet jacks to transport finished product or raw materials. The Packer performs visual product inspections, reports issues, and prioritizes safety and general manufacturing practices.

Responsibilities

• Perform tasks according to Safety and Food Safety Standards, including participation in safety training programs.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (SQF, GMP, HACCP, OSHA) and company policies related to food safety, sanitation, and environmental regulations.
• Retrieve and understand product specifications from the company’s ERP system, including weight and packaging requirements for each product.
• Program the date machine for bags and boxes according to daily production rotations.
• Prepare the workstation at the start of the shift with necessary materials (bags, boxes).
• Maintain a clean and organized work area as per the company’s good housekeeping policy.
• Meet productivity goals by following the production schedule and specifications.
• Participate in line rotations, including moving to other lines, assisting coworkers, or cleaning lines during downtime or breaks.
• Communicate proactively with leaders and machine operators regarding product deficiencies (e.g., raw, overcooked, or incorrectly weighted tortillas).
• Operate packaging equipment such as Auto Baggers, Ilapak, and auto baggers.
• Complete changeovers on the packaging area, including vision systems, counter stackers, auto baggers, bag printers, and weight systems.
• Enter production information into the TGI system (Machine Log) and complete product pathways.
• Log all downtime in the Machine Log system.
• Retrieve and return packaging materials to the warehouse.
• Use computers and RF guns proficiently.
• Rotate within assigned workstations, including packaging and boxing tortillas, and lifting boxes up to 50 lbs.
• Assist in the QA program, including pH verification, metal detection, recording pH levels, and identifying specification errors.
• Follow and comply with all SQF requirements and maintain workstations per SQF guidelines.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Grade school level education; High School Diploma or GED is a plus.
• 1-2 years’ experience operating or working with food manufacturing machinery or similar experience.
• 1-2 years’ experience following work task specifications, SOPs, or recipes.

• Adherence to a drug and alcohol zero-tolerance policy.
• Compliance with food safety and third-party certification policies (SQF, Gluten-Free, Organic, etc.).

Working Conditions

• Continual walking and standing on hard surfaces, climbing, and descending steps.
• Frequent bending, kneeling, squatting, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Exposure to rotating and reciprocating parts, industrial equipment (e.g., pallet jacks), and varying temperatures (cool to hot).
• Exposure to loud noises generated from equipment.
• Ability to stand for long periods in warm conditions.
