PA or CRNP (ACNP), Senior - Nights - HVI Cardiothoracic Surgery

UPMC's Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) is seeking a dedicated Overnight Advanced Practice Provider to join our Thoracic Surgery Division at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. This role is ideal for a passionate Physician Assistant or Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (Acute Care) looking to be part of a dynamic team that values mentorship, growth, and collaboration in cardiothoracic surgery.

About the Role

The overnight Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will manage thoracic patients with approximately 90% of the role focused on hospital rounding and 10% on operating room responsibilities. Key duties include:

• Answering calls from nursing and other services to advance patient care and complete interventions initiated during the daytime
• Responding to codes involving thoracic surgery patients
• Assisting in the OR for urgent overnight surgical cases
• Evaluating and staffing all pending consults
• Completing thoracic patient admissions, performing history and physical exams, entering orders, and communicating plans to nursing, medical, and surgical teams
• Providing overnight updates to the on-call physician and daytime APP/trainee team

Department Details

The Thoracic Surgery Division cares for patients with a wide range of disorders affecting the lungs and esophagus. Surgeons in this division are pioneers in developing minimally invasive surgical techniques and innovative approaches for complex lung and foregut issues. APPs are integral to the team from diagnosis through long-term management, working across various sites and situations.

Schedule

3 x 12-hour shifts (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.), including weekday and weekend nights as scheduled. No on-call required.

Requirements

Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner (CRNP)

• Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program
• BSN or MSN preferred
• Professional nursing and/or nurse practitioner experience preferred
• Current state RN license and CRNP certification
• National certification, eligible for licensure by Pennsylvania Board of Nursing
• Current CPR certification
• Act 33, Act 73, and Act 34 clearances required

Physician Assistant (PA)

• Graduate of an ARC-PA accredited physician assistant program
• BS or MS preferred
• Experience as a physician assistant and/or in a clinical setting preferred
• Current state PA license certified by the NCCPA
• Current CPR certification
• Act 33, Act 73, and Act 34 clearances required

Senior Level Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of experience or completion of a post-graduate residency
• Solid/Strong/Good performance rating or higher on annual evaluation
• Completion of an OAPP-approved professional contribution within one year of hire/promotion
• Department chair approval for promotion
• ACLS, ITLS, NALS, PALS, or other AHA-certified course within 30 days of hire (for inpatient settings)

The posted salary range is for the Senior level, which requires three or more years of APP experience.
