Our Power Team is seeking a Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering student for a Summer 2027 internship in Overhead Transmission Line Design Engineering, based in our Trussville, AL office. This temporary position is for individuals currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

About the Role

WSP USA hosts hundreds of internships across the United States, offering hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance education and professional aptitude. Interns gain exposure to real projects while working alongside senior staff. This internship is anticipated to take place from May 17, 2027, through August 6, 2027, with a flexible individual start date. Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.

WSP brings global expertise in power delivery, power generation, and program management, recently expanded through the acquisition of POWER Engineers, Inc., and the integration of TRC Companies, deepening our power practice and energy advisory services.

Responsibilities

  • Support a variety of engineering tasks with the goal of developing technical, social, and ethical skills.
  • Learn basic principles of Civil/Structural/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
  • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Civil or Mechanical Engineering or related undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2027 or later.
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Demonstrated interest in Civil or Mechanical Engineering or a related field, with a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to execute projects.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ideal coursework includes structural analysis, concrete, steel, soils, foundations, and surveying.
  • Attention to detail, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Prior internship and/or related designing, drafting, or engineering experience is a plus.
  • Students who have passed or are scheduled to take the FE/EIT exam will be strongly considered.
  • Familiarity with design, drafting, or engineering software such as MATHCAD, SOLIDWORKS, AUTOCAD, and SharePoint is beneficial.
  • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
