Responsibilities

• Use apprentice-level knowledge of electrical line work to safely construct and maintain electric distribution lines.
• Climb poles of all types and perform tasks such as changing out arms, transformers, and conductors, depending on experience level.
• Climb ladders to install, re-sag service conductors, and repair light fixtures.
• Develop general and specific knowledge of working around energized lines/equipment to construct, maintain, and repair electrical systems, including both de-energized and energized lines.
• Assist upper-class linemen by providing tools, materials, and supplies; possess own basic hand tools.
• Prepare equipment and worksites for effective completion of assignments.
• Assist ground crew operations as directed.
• Drive and operate equipment to frame and set poles, lay wire, connect and disconnect services.
• Respond to power outages and customer problems, troubleshooting to restore power.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Must possess a CDL Learner’s Permit with the ability to obtain a CDL-A within 60 days of employment.
• Prior experience as a groundman or completion of a technical training apprentice program.
• Ability to read and understand technical information, manuals, policies, procedures, work orders, blueprints, and diagrams.
• Ability to handle emergency situations, hazardous conditions, multiple priorities, frequent interruptions, and time constraints.
• Proficiency in English (oral and written) to communicate information, instructions, and ideas.
• Dependable and trustworthy.
• Capable of performing bucket and pole-top rescue.
• Train for lineman responsibilities.

Nice-to-Haves

• Valid CDL-A license.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The work environment can be loud and may involve:

• Working near moving mechanical parts and in outdoor conditions, including inclement weather, heat, humidity, and exposure to elements.
• Regularly lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds and carrying that weight a minimum of 20 feet.
• Walking over uneven, steep, or difficult terrain for distances over one mile.
• Performing strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
• Carrying 25 pounds of gear while working in an aerial lift device with a 350-pound weight limit.
• Lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects using abdominal and lower back muscles for extended periods.
• Climbing onto elevated equipment and standing for long periods.
• Quickly moving arms and legs and demonstrating excellent stamina.
• Hearing, seeing, and differentiating colors and depth over long distances.

Schedule

• Full-time position.
• Frequently requires long hours and weekend work.
• Willingness to travel for storm recovery; length of stay depends on work volume.
• Primarily works out-of-town during the workweek, requiring weekly overnight travel.
• Out-of-area and extended travel is common, dictated by customer demand and power outages related to natural disasters.
• Must be available to travel for work routinely and with very little notice.
