Outpatient Surgery Coder
About the role
This position involves the review, analysis, and assignment of codes based on appropriate coding guidelines for outpatient medical record documentation. The primary responsibilities include coding for Outpatient Surgery, Wound Care, and Observation to ensure correct assignment of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 HCPCS codes.
Responsibilities
- Assign diagnosis and surgical codes using the 3M CAC 360 system to patient records in accordance with UHDDS coding guidelines.
- Assign procedural categories and modifiers as applicable.
- Assign an appropriate discharge disposition as necessary.
- Maintain or exceed established coding accuracy and productivity standards.
- Evaluate the assigned coding work queue and collaborate with the revenue cycle team to resolve accounts within the expected timeframe.
Requirements
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience: Previous coding experience is required.
- Certifications: At least one of the following certifications is required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-A, or CPC-H.
- Preferred Qualifications: Completion of a Coding Certificate program (AHIMA accredited) is preferred. Experience in coding at a multi-facility organization and remote coding experience are beneficial.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and major disease processes.
- Knowledge of reimbursement systems and federal, state, and payer-specific regulations.
- Knowledge of the Standards of Ethical Coding.
- Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to research, analyze data, and resolve issues.
- Teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
