Outpatient Coder Certified - Surgery

About the role

The Revenue Cycle Outpatient Coder is a Health Information Management Professional responsible for ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 code assignment and abstracting of outpatient episodes of care according to ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 Coding Guidelines and Principles. Keeps abreast of clinical conditions, coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Brings identified concerns to management for resolution.

Job Duties

• Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson Performs
• IDC-10-CM and CPT-4 coding and data abstraction within established minimum accuracy and productivity rates
• Attends mandatory staff education sessions and department meetings
• Refers coding issues to supervisor in a timely manner for determination and guideline development
• Complete and submit a weekly productivity log

Requirements

• 3 years experience coding outpatient medical records
• Knowledge and ability to translate verbal and written descriptions of diseases, injuries and medical procedures to standard diagnosis and procedure codes used in healthcare reimbursement, assessment of clinical care, medical research, and public health
• Knowledge and understanding of health information concepts and terminology to include anatomy, physiology, medical disciplines and diagnoses/procedures/treatments, health information legal/data standards, statistics, data/quality management and computer skills
• Knowledge of and ability to use office support tools available at the desktop (for example: word processing, e-mail, presentation software, and spreadsheets)
• Knowledge of the organization's industry group, trends, directions, major issues, regulatory considerations, and trendsetters, ability to apply this knowledge appropriately to diverse situations
• Knowledge of the processes and the ability to identify, capture and document relevant business information in an auditable, organized, understandable and easily retrievable manner

Qualifications

• RHIA - Registered Health Information Administrator - American Health Information Management Association or
• RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician - American Health Information Management Association or
• CPC - Certified Professional Coder - American Academy of Professional Coders or
• CCS - Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association
