About the role

The Outpatient Clinic Manager is a key member of the ambulatory operations team responsible for pediatric subspecialty clinical services. Under minimal supervision, the role manages operational aspects of clinic staffing and flow, oversees clinic staff, and ensures that staff, equipment, and resources support the provision of excellent clinical care. The position partners with stakeholders, including department and community care providers and Primary Children’s Hospital, to enhance delivery of care. The ambulatory group consists of 13 pediatric subspecialty divisions and service lines primarily located at Eccles Primary Children’s Outpatient Services building, Primary Children’s Hospital sites, and some satellite clinics. The Department of Pediatrics is the second largest in the University of Utah School of Medicine and is committed to improving children’s lives through advocacy, education, research, and clinical care.

Responsibilities

  • Operations: Provide daily management, oversight, and problem-solving in clinical flow and staffing; use resources effectively to support clinical operations financial goals; work with department leadership to implement strategic plans; foster a culture of professionalism and engagement; identify areas for improvement; develop and implement policies and procedures in customer service, staffing, and budgetary goals consistent with University policies.
  • Clinical Services: Oversee hiring, training, orientation, and professional development of clinical support staff and assigned division clinical staff; monitor patient volumes, quality of care, and staff performance; promote competency through educational programs and training; assist in developing documentation and care planning guidelines; ensure compliance with internal and external standards; lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Patient Experience: Promote customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns, and feedback; facilitate cooperative relationships to improve patient experience; lead quality improvement initiatives and report patient experience survey scores to staff and leadership.
  • Physician and Staff Engagement: Collaborate with division chiefs and clinical experts to ensure consistency and quality in clinical care; conduct routine meetings with division leadership; present data on KPIs, space utilization, staffing, and physician load leveling; mentor and support staff; evaluate and recommend staff leadership roles; lead QI initiatives and enhance care coordination efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).
  • Four to five years of progressively more responsible management experience.
  • Background knowledge of the hiring department’s area of specialization to analyze, plan, and draw conclusions for recommendations.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes to monitor and develop subordinates and ensure smooth department operations.
  • Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
  • Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
  • This position is patient-sensitive and requires immunization according to CDC standards and hospital policy, with limited exemptions for medical contraindications or religious beliefs.

Qualifications

  • Preferences include an MBA or MHA degree.
  • Previous experience in clinical operations, leading medical assistants, leading process improvement projects, and working with RNs and providers.

Pay

$60,000 to $109,649 annually.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
