Our Place, Family Home - Full-Time Day Support Staff

About the role

VOA Northern California & Northern Nevada is seeking Day Shift Support Staff (6:00 AM – 2:30 PM) at Our Place, Family Home, a housing-focused shelter for women and families experiencing homelessness. Full-time positions with benefits eligibility for employees working 30+ hours per week.

Responsibilities

• Provide compassionate, professional, and nonjudgmental service to program participants
• Explain and facilitate adherence to program rules and regulations
• Coordinate daily routines: meal preparation/service, bed/sleeping assignments, showers, laundering
• Maintain an engaging presence on the grounds and provide “awake” shift coverage
• Conduct wellness, safety, and sanitation checks during designated periods
• Prepare rooms and dorm areas for new participants; maintain staff and facility cleanliness to meet county health and sanitation requirements
• Respond to participant questions and concerns; maintain clear, thorough communication
• Perform clerical duties: answer phones, manage email, record messages, sort mail, file, and use computer applications
• Assist with participant property management: inventory, storage, distribution, and policy compliance
• Document and report client concerns, infractions, shift logs, observation logs, and incident reports
• Monitor program equipment, supplies, and linen inventory; restock or replace as needed
• De-escalate crises and respond to emergencies; assist participants and coworkers as needed
• Communicate with on-site staff, managers, service providers, and external representatives
• Adhere to ethical standards, program philosophy, and confidentiality laws
• Assist in training and development of new staff; identify ongoing training needs
• Support program development and maintain knowledge of fire, safety, and health standards
• Assist participants in the Boutique: guide selection, ensure equitable distribution, sort donations, monitor inventory, and document distributions
• Coordinate with case managers and shelter staff to address participant needs
• During inclement weather, monitor and maintain safe environments in overflow areas and warming centers; conduct hourly safety and security checks
• Support participant development by implementing plans, notifying staff and case management of issues, and modeling positive behavior
• Pursue self-development through training, meetings, and required certifications (e.g., CPR, First Aid)

Requirements

• Ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions without ethnic or social prejudice
• General knowledge of issues related to homelessness, substance abuse, families in crisis, young adults, minorities, and persons with disabilities
• Flexibility to work irregular hours and function effectively as a team member
• Computer skills required
• Must complete CPR and First Aid training within 90 days of hire; maintain re-certification as necessary
• Must pass a criminal background check

Pay

USD $19.12 per hour
