Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgeon Scientist - Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor (Tenure Track)

Faculty position in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW SMPH).

About the role

The Division of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery seeks an exceptional Head & Neck Surgeon-Scientist with a track record of clinical excellence and academic contributions. This full-time, onsite tenure-track position offers 50% or greater dedicated research time and opportunities for growth across all aspects of the academic mission.

Resources and opportunities include:

• Multidisciplinary management of head & neck malignancies with a core team of 5 head & neck surgical oncologists, 1 endoscopic skull base surgeon, 3 head & neck radiation oncologists, and 2 head & neck medical oncologists.
• Weekly multidisciplinary head & neck tumor boards presenting 15-25 patients, plus regular melanoma, sarcoma, and endocrine conferences.
• Affiliation with the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Wisconsin.
• NIH-sponsored Head & Neck Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant funding ($14 million, providing over $350,000 annually for pilot research projects).

Applicants will be considered for the tenure-track titles Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

Research

• Develop an original or transfer an existing high-quality research program, ultimately achieving independent and extramurally supported funding in head & neck oncologic surgery.
• Lead and conduct impactful basic, clinical, translational, or health sciences research, leveraging collaborators and core resources (biostatistics, research programming, clinical data analysis, qualitative research support).

Clinical

• Demonstrate advanced diagnostic and surgical management skills for complex head & neck malignancies, including ablative oncologic surgery, local/regional reconstructive techniques, microvascular free flap reconstruction, and TORS.
• Collaborate with radiation oncology, medical oncology, and colleagues within the division and department.
• Participate in shared otolaryngology on-call duties and regional outreach.
• Clinical practices supported by a team of 12 Advanced Practice Providers.

Education

• Educate medical students, residents, and fellows in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, including commitments to ACGME-accredited residency training and the AHNS-accredited H&N fellowship program.
• Contribute to daily clinical responsibilities for trainees at all levels.

Service and Leadership

• Actively participate in regional and national professional associations.
• Pursue leadership opportunities within the department and institution based on individual interests and expertise.

Requirements

• Eligibility or certification in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) or the American Osteopathic Boards of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery (AOBOOHNS).
• Completion of, or current participation in, an American Head & Neck Society-accredited fellowship or its equivalent by the appointment start date.
• WI medical license by start date.
• Eligibility for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges by start date.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in core knowledge and advanced surgical management of head & neck malignancies, including TORS.
• For Associate Professor or Professor rank: Meeting departmental and UW Divisional Committee guidelines for promotion or appointment on the tenure track.

Qualifications

About the Department

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, established as an independent department in 2025, includes seven divisions: Otology and Neurotology, Laryngology, Pediatric Otolaryngology, Comprehensive Otolaryngology, Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery, Head and Neck Oncologic Surgery, and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The department provides specialized tertiary and quaternary care for adults and children, with ongoing clinical trials recruiting nationally.

• 20-resident ACGME-accredited residency program and fellowships in Head & Neck Oncologic/Reconstructive Surgery and Laryngology.
