Position Summary

The Orthoptist I provides specialized clinical care for patients with ocular motility, binocular vision, and related visual disorders by performing comprehensive eye examinations and delivering non-surgical treatment under the direction of ophthalmologists. This role conducts advanced diagnostic testing, develops and implements individualized treatment plans, monitors patient progress, and modifies interventions to support optimal visual outcomes. The Orthoptist I partners closely with physicians and multidisciplinary care teams, educates patients and families on diagnoses and treatment plans, and maintains accurate clinical documentation to ensure continuity of care. Additionally, this position contributes to quality improvement, research, and residency education while pursuing ongoing professional development to support excellence in pediatric ophthalmic care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Credits Comprehensive Eye Exams: Performs detailed eye examinations upon physician referral, verifies referral appropriateness, and uses specialized tests (e.g., visual acuity, field, color vision, fundus photography) to diagnose and recommend treatment options.

  • Administers Non-Medical Treatments: Develops and implements non-surgical treatment plans for ocular disorders as prescribed by ophthalmologists, including therapeutic devices and interventions.

  • Maintains and Adjusts Treatment Plans: Designs individualized treatment programs, monitors outcomes, and adjusts or discontinues treatments as needed, while communicating with physicians and care teams.

  • Provides Patient and Family Education: Builds professional relationships with patients and families, explains procedures and results, and incorporates their needs into care plans.

  • Collaborates and Documents Care: Works with multidisciplinary teams, maintains detailed medical records, prepares reports for stakeholders, and ensures follow-up care.

  • Supports Education and Research: Contributes to residency training, participates in quality improvement and research initiatives, and engages in professional development and scholarly activities.

Education

  • Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree required

  • Licensure/ Certifications: Current certification as an Orthoptist by the American Orthoptic Council AOC or an equivalent level of certification from an accredited foreign program.

Experience

  • The posted pay range is Boston Children’s reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.

  • Any base pay offer provided depends on skills, experience, education, certifications, and a variety of other job-related factors.
