Orthopedic Tech Medical Assistant (MA) - Full Time

About the Role

The Orthopedic Technician provides support through a variety of tasks related to patient care management, organization, and communication while maintaining all applicable KHI Policies and Procedures.

Responsibilities

• Escorts patients to exam rooms and prepares them for exams, including taking vital signs, documenting history, and noting the reason for seeking care
• Cross-trains in data entry, balancing accounts, charging fees, and collecting payments due
• Schedules and confirms appointments
• Maintains and facilitates communication between patients, family, and clinical staff
• Reports to Public Health as directed by the provider
• Maintains work area, including exam rooms, supplies, medication, and immunizations
• Performs CLIA-waived lab tests and obtains specimens
• Performs proficiency testing and runs controls for waived tests
• May perform venipuncture
• Participates in division meetings
• Provides patient care under the direct supervision (in the office suite or exam room) of a Physician, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner
• Applies, adjusts, and removes casts, splints, immobilization devices, and traction
• Measures and fits patients for braces and other orthopedic devices

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• If LPN: Graduate of a practical or vocational nursing program
• BLS certification through the American Heart Association
• Current and valid Registered Orthopedic Technologist Certification (due within one year of hire)
• If Medical Assistant, must meet one of the following criteria:
  • Attended an approved Medical Assistant training program (diploma or transcripts on file) accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools
  • Completed an unapproved training program and passed a medical assistant examination administered by a certifying organization accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies or the American National Standards Institute (certification on file)
  • Directly supervised by the same physician, physician group, or physician assistant for a minimum of 2,000 hours prior to February 2000 (letter on file)
  • Completed a medical services training program of the U.S. Armed Forces (certificate on file)
  • Completed an unapproved medical assistant training program and was employed as a medical assistant after program completion prior to February 2000
• If LPN: Current, valid Arizona LPN license or compact state LPN/LVN license

Preferences

• One to two years of experience as a medical assistant or LPN in a clinical outpatient setting

Work Requirements

• Must be able to distinguish appropriate colors
• Capable of consistently reaching and/or working above and below shoulder level
• Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds
• Capable of walking or being on feet 90% of the time per day with frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, and standing
• Capable of sitting at a desk 10% of the time per day and communicating using a telephone
