About the Role
As an Oromo Telephone Interpreter, you will handle on-demand calls, rendering accurate and culturally sensitive interpretations between Oromo and English speakers. This remote, independent contractor position serves diverse industries, including healthcare, government, insurance, finance, law enforcement, and emergency services. Interpreters must process information quickly, maintain professionalism, and navigate sensitive or emotional conversations.
Responsibilities
- Respond promptly to interpreting sessions and conduct interpretations in a professional, courteous manner.
- Render correct concepts and meanings according to established interpretation protocols, avoiding omissions or additions.
- Speak clearly in both languages with proper pronunciation, enunciation, and polite expressions.
- Maintain professionalism and neutrality during sessions, even when speakers are incoherent or upset (e.g., 911 calls).
- Follow client instructions and industry-specific protocols (e.g., medical, legal, insurance) to meet expectations.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and adapt to regional or accent differences.
- Remain available and punctual during scheduled work hours.
- Handle high call volumes and extended sessions without breaks, as required by call nature.
- Adapt to technology enhancements that improve service delivery.
Requirements
- Fluency in Oromo and English, including cultural and regional nuances.
- Excellent listening, retention, and note-taking skills for accurate interpretation.
- Ability to remain neutral, objective, and detached during sensitive conversations (e.g., end-of-life discussions, emergencies).
- Education or experience in language-related fields (e.g., teaching, translation, interpretation) preferred.
- Legally authorized to work in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to read and write in both languages (highly preferred).
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Candidates employed by LanguageLine Solutions clients or affiliates may not be eligible.
Technical Requirements
- Dedicated personal device for business use (desktop/laptop with Windows, MacOS, or ChromeOS; tablets or smartphones acceptable).
- Restricted brands: Kaspersky products and Huawei hardware.
- High-speed internet with minimum 5 Mbps download, 3 Mbps upload, ping ≤ 300 ms, and jitter ≤ 30 ms.
- Quiet, distraction-free workspace.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to operate a keyboard/mouse and remain stationary for extended periods.
- Sufficient manual dexterity for typing/writing.
- Able to lift up to 26 lbs.
- May be exposed to moderate noise (e.g., computer, audio, telephone).
Pay
$0.70–$0.85 per minute (independent contractor position; not eligible for employee benefits).
