Responsibilities
- Serve as a positive peer leader and mentor for first-year students at the University of Alaska Anchorage
- Lead Howl Days new student orientation sessions for incoming students (present information and lead activities)
- Lead campus tours both in-person and virtually
- Reach out and connect with prospective and incoming students via phone and email
- Aid in the development and implementation of new student orientation activities
- Coordinate and facilitate Seawolves Connect, a peer mentorship program that allows students to meet 1-on-1 with an Orientation Leader
- Work in partnership with UAA campus partners to support students in understanding course placement options and registering for classes
- Work as a campus resource by learning and sharing information about departments and resources across campus
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Intermediate knowledge of computers and software
- Ability to work on computer and phone for extended periods
- Desire to develop leadership skills
- Effective communication skills and excellent customer service skills
- Ability to lead projects and make challenging decisions when the supervisor is not available
- Ability to develop and implement new student engagement opportunities with the support of a supervisor
- Ability to work with limited supervision
- Networking abilities to serve as a liaison with various departments and resources on and off campus
- Ability to serve as an ambassador for the university
- Good verbal and written communication skills
Minimum Qualifications
- Enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment or
- Enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters;
- Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
Position Details
- This position is open to undergraduate students only.
- The student position is a Level 2 Step 16 and earns $15.26 per hour.
- Orientation Leaders work May 5, 2026 through August 22, 2026.
- Full participation (40hr/wk) in training May 5-29, 2026 is required.
- During the summer, Orientation Leaders may work up to 40 hours per week, and are required to work a minimum of 30 hours per week.
- Participation in all Howl Days Orientations are required.
- Time off exceptions can only be made with prior approval by the supervisor.
- After the summer orientation season ends, some Orientation Leaders will have the option of working throughout the school year as well.
- Orientation Leaders who are invited to continue working during the school year work 15-20 hours per week.
- This is a pooled position and applications are reviewed as needed.
