Organ Preservation Coordinator

Location: Milwaukee, WI (Froedtert Hospital) – hybrid role

About the Role

The Organ Preservationist (OP) serves as the key individual responsible for facilitating the organ recovery process when deceased donor organs become available to transplant candidates. This position provides 24/7 on-call coverage (rotating schedule) for the surgical recovery of donor organs for the heart, kidney, liver, lung, and pancreas programs at Froedtert Health and the liver and kidney programs at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The OP coordinates and assists with key aspects of the surgical recovery of organs used for transplantation, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and standards set forth by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and other regulatory agencies. A high degree of independence is expected in executing complex logistical support operations for organ recovery and perfusion.

Responsibilities

• Provide 24/7 on-call coverage for organ procurement, including thoracic procurement and travel for transplantation.
• Coordinate and assist with surgical recovery of donor organs (heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas).
• Maintain a safe environment by adhering to regulatory standards (UNOS, CMS, etc.).
• Execute logistical support for organ recovery and perfusion with a high degree of independence.
• Perform administrative duties when not flying for procurement.
• Maintain composure and professional communication with surgeons, Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) staff, donor hospital staff, and Froedtert Operating Room staff.

Requirements

• Minimum of 1 year of experience in Acute Care, Surgical Care, Radiology, Cardiology, Emergency Services, Transplant, and/or Organ Procurement Organization (OPO).
• Degree or certificate from an accredited EMT training program, School of Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology, or other healthcare-related field.
• High School diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a biological sciences field.
• Knowledge of medical records and terminology.
• Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, internet, basic database use).
• Ability to arrive at the hospital on short notice and travel via air or ground to donor hospitals nationwide.
• Ability to work unpredictable on-call hours with flexibility for unforeseen delays.
• Must be licensed in the State of Wisconsin (if applicable).
• Transplant Preservation Certification through the American Board of Transplant Certification (ABTC) required within 18 months of hire.

Schedule

• Full-time (1.0 FTE, 40 standard hours per week)
• Shift 1 (24-hour shift coverage, including holidays and weekends)
