About the role

Grand River Navigation has openings for the position of Ordinary Seaman aboard our US-flagged self-unloading vessels. "We can go where the big ships go and also where they can't!"

Responsibilities

  • Perform general deck maintenance, including cleaning, painting, chipping, and preservation work.
  • Participate in vessel mooring, unmooring, and docking operations.
  • Assist with cargo operations as directed by supervisory personnel.
  • Stand lookout and perform watch standing duties in accordance with vessel procedures.
  • Operate and maintain deck equipment, tools, and machinery.
  • Conduct routine inspections of decks, cargo areas, and safety equipment.
  • Follow all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and vessel procedures.
  • Assist with line handling, rigging, and securing cargo and equipment.
  • Participate in emergency drills and respond to onboard emergencies as required.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work areas throughout the vessel.
  • Work cooperatively with deck, engine, and shoreside personnel to support vessel operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Boatswain, Mate, or Captain.

Requirements

  • TWIC Card - Transportation Worker Identification Credential
  • United States Merchant Mariners Credential issued by the USCG
  • Unexpired US Passport or Enhanced Driver’s License allowing entry into Canada
  • Legally authorized to work in the US without restriction
  • Excellent communication and ability to multi-task
  • Experience working as a team and desire to work together as a team player
  • Alignment with our core values
  • Maritime training or recent vessel experience preferred
  • Willingness to serve on either a Ship or Articulated Tug/Barge Unit (ATB)
