About the Role
Jump-start your career as an Operating Room Technician at HCA Florida Mercy Hospital. This role demonstrates knowledge of surgical instruments and principles of sterile technique, anticipates the needs of the surgical suite, and collaborates with the surgical team to improve customer satisfaction. The Operating Room Technician is a supportive role implemented as the needs of the department require.
Responsibilities
- Assembles supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures.
- Prepares sterile instrument table and gathers equipment after procedure for cleaning and sterilization.
- Accurately completes all sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and reports discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
- Positions patient according to type of surgery.
- Prepares patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
- Provides comfort and support to pre-operative patients.
- Transports patients to and from the surgical suite.
- Assists the surgical team in surgical procedures, including passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
- Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after the last case; restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case cleanup.
- Maintains a safe work area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Practices and adheres to the "Code of Conduct" and "Mission and Value Statement."
Specialty-Specific Responsibilities
- Maintains aseptic techniques and actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
- Properly handles specimens: identifies specimen appropriately with the physician, maintains specimens during the procedure, and checks with the surgeon prior to passing off the field.
- Obtains specific supplies, non-narcotic medications, and equipment; checks preference cards prior to the case and makes arrangements to obtain special supplies.
Qualifications
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Operating Room Scrub Technician Certification (CST) preferred.
- Completion of an Accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience working as a scrub tech.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification or must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
- 1 year minimum experience as an OR Tech preferred.

About the Facility
HCA Florida Mercy Hospital is a 488-bed facility accredited by the Joint Commission, offering a wide range of medical specialties including emergency care, heart and vascular care, and designated as a Primary Stroke Center. Other specialties include maternity and neonatal care (Level II NICU), inpatient rehabilitation (CARF accredited), and a Comprehensive Community Cancer Program accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
