About the Role
This position develops, implements, and maintains supply acquisition, storage, and inventory systems for the central inventory of supplies and equipment necessary to support patient care. Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, this role is a member of the surgical team who works with Surgeons, Anesthesia personnel, RNs, and other personnel to perform delegated patient care duties according to professional standards and organizational policies. The individual in this position will interface daily with patients, physicians, nursing staff, and technologists to ensure quality services and continuum of care.
Responsibilities
- In conjunction with OR Director and procurement, develops and manages efficient acquisition of surgical inventory materials.
- Develops and maintains systems to assure the accuracy of perpetual inventory counts.
- Develops and maintains inventory locator systems to facilitate easy retrieval of all items.
- Develops and maintains reorder management systems (including par levels and min/max parameters) to assure high customer service while minimizing inventory levels and outages.
- Develops materials cost and inventory reduction programs and provides data to measure progress toward cost reduction targets.
- Develops and analyzes reports (e.g., ABC analysis, usage history) to maximize inventory efficiencies.
- Conducts year-end physical inventory and other periodic inventory counts as necessary.
- Provides inventory expertise and technical liaison to Central Sterile Processing.
- Assures daily operational needs for supplies and equipment are met.
- Ascertains daily order requirements through Lawson recommendations, physical counts, and personal observation.
- Coordinates special deliveries from vendors.
- Assists surgeon when necessary.
- Assists with immediate pre- and post-op care of patient, equipment, and instrumentation.
- Second circulates as assigned.
- Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile role or in the OR.
- Assists the circulating RN in monitoring technique of all persons in the OR to maintain a sterile field.
- Performs sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating RN following established guidelines.
- Assists by gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
- Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during surgical procedures.
- Processes supplies, instruments, and equipment in patient care.
- Assists with general cleaning duties of the department.
- Maintains accurate and appropriate records as directed.
- Utilizes the computer to process patient requisitions and enters patient/procedure information as required.
- Completes computer workflow functions and organizes workload for the area.
- Operates and troubleshoots various equipment, including but not limited to: electro-surgical cautery machine, suction, power equipment, microscope, laser, phaco emulsifier, irrigator, pulsevac, autoclaves, steris, laparoscope, surgical lights, and tables.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree.
- 3 years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist.
Skills
- Proficient communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficient in operating patient care equipment.
- Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, policies, standards, and protocols.
Physical Requirements
- Able to bend, stoop, reach, and perform normal rotation, standing, and walking for an 11–12 hour shift.
- Able to ambulate, position, turn, and pull up self-assisting adult patients.
- Heavy/hard work: requires strength and stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials/equipment weighing 40+ lbs.
Working Environment
- May be required to travel between facilities/buildings.
- May be exposed to viruses, diseases, infections, traumatic situations (including psychiatric crises, physical injuries, and death).
- Working protracted or irregular hours; must be flexible and able to take call.
Schedule
Days, Monday–Friday. Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
