About the role
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Responsibilities
- Provides comprehensive eye and vision care to eligible veterans presenting in clinic and during scheduled regular and off-hours emergency calls.
- Treatment of eye diseases and disorders within the scope of the optometrist's clinical privileges.
- Performing reading of tele retinal imaging studies with approval and training from the Office of Telehealth Services Store and Forward Training Center.
- Maintain licensure and credentials sufficient to practice optometry, including all diagnostic and medical therapeutic modalities for treating diseases, conditions, and injuries related to the field.
- Provide rehabilitative care if applicable.

- Manage medically complex patients for two years.
Requirements
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed Optometrist(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Optometry degree from an approved school.
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice optometry.
- Successfully completed residency training or comparable experience.
- Passes all parts of the National Board of Examiners in Optometry intended for basic licensure.
- Periods of long standing, occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects, long periods of sitting at a computer station, high degree of accuracy, potentially stressful situations, and ability to adapt work plans based on patient status.
