About the role

The Optometric Technician ensures all patients receive the highest quality optometric care during eye exams, providing an unsurpassed patient experience by seamlessly linking the doctor and other primary care functions.

Responsibilities

• Assists with patient care and eye exams, including managing patient records and supporting patient flow throughout the exam.
• Performs various tests to aid the optometrist with vision examinations, including but not limited to visual acuity measurements, depth and color perception tests, and retinal imaging.
• Performs tests to aid the optometrist in accurate diagnosis and treatment within an appropriate time frame.
• Reviews prescriptions and patient information carefully; identifies special needs and consults with Optometrists, Opticians, or Practice Manager when necessary.
• Identifies and resolves situations involving dissatisfied patients quickly.
• Performs work accurately and thoroughly despite time pressure and patient volume.
• Handles and files all patient records in an organized and efficient manner in accordance with practice standards and HIPAA.
• Supports contact lens exams and orders, including contact lens care, trial inventory, and patient orders.
• Utilizes appointment book/scheduling procedures and computer operations effectively.
• Operates the point-of-sale system, inputting patient information with accuracy and attention to detail; processes sales transactions following operational standards.
• Maintains a safe working environment for all team members and patients.
• Supports compliance with visual merchandising in exam lanes, assessment rooms, and contact lens areas.
• Adapts to various examination scenarios and maintains a personable demeanor with patients and staff.
• Performs all pre-examination testing with accuracy and explains measurements to patients.
• Responsible for maintenance, disinfection of equipment, and providing clinical support to the Optometrist as needed.
• Works weekends and evenings to support business needs (varies by location).
• Adheres to attendance and daily timekeeping requirements, company policies, and dress code.
• Performs other functions as assigned by the Practice Manager or business needs.

Requirements

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• 2+ years’ experience in optometry, ophthalmology, or healthcare setting.
• Knowledge of optical and medical terminology.
• Understanding and utilization of optical equipment and diagnostic testing (e.g., pre-exam testing, visual acuity).
• Strong coaching, communication, and listening skills.
• Problem-solving ability and strong interpersonal skills.
• Organization skills and ability to assess priorities, address multiple tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work autonomously.
• Knowledge of office environment and strong basic math skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in healthcare, customer service, retail, and/or optical.
• Optometric technician certification.
